Greetings everyone!  Welcome to the first post in our series on
Today we are going to learn about the Maca root, or what the Peruvians call The Magic root  and what westerners are increasingly calling natural Viagra.
I have been taking Maca for about a month and am definitely experiencing a noticable increase in my sexual/athletic powers, my energy level and my overall sense of well being.
Bottom lineit works!
It is safe in high doses and in fact, the more you consume the better.  I use raw organic red Maca from Natural Zing.  I take two to three tablespoons/day in a drink mixed with other superfoods such as Cocao (raw chocolate), Mesquite Pods, HempSeed protein powder, Flax Seeds, Lycium (Goji) Berries, Camu Camu, Quinoa and whatever else I can get my hands on.  I put anything that is not powdered into my coffee/spice grinder to make it easier to mix and digest.  Most people prefer smoothies.  I just throw it all into a mason jar with filtered or spring water, shake and drink but thats just how I am.
The following was written by Chris Kilham, aka The Medicine hunter.  Chris travels the world in search of traditional, plant-based medicines, and works with shamans, healers, growers, harvesters, scientists, trade officials and other plant medicine experts in dozens of countries.
Chris motto is, I want people using safer medicine.  And that means plant medicine.
I could not agree more and use as wide a variety of plants in my diet that I can and recomend everyone else do the same.  Especially the which include herbs, seeds, nuts, legumes and other plants.
Maca: Perus Natural Viagra
The South American country of Peru is home to numerous beneficial plants, including Peruvian maca root, a legendary sex-enhancing root passed down from the Inca. Id heard about Peruvian maca herb and extract for years. Peruvian maca root has been dubbed Peruvian ginseng, even though it bears no relation to ginseng. But like ginseng, the maca plant is employed into a Peruvian maca extract to increase strength, energy, stamina, libido and sexual function, a winning combination of health benefits if there ever was one.
To investigate macas health benefits and understand the role that maca plays in Peruvian culture, my wife and I headed down to Peru to explore the maca trail. In the process we met with maca traders, growers and scientists, and came back tremendously impressed by this plant, which is now available as a supplement in U.S. health food stores.
What is Maca
Maca, Lepidium meyenii, is an annual plant which produces a radish-like root. The root of maca is typically dried and stored, and will easily keep for seven years. The plant is cultivated in the Junin plateau of Perus Central Highlands, and was highly revered by the Inca.
During the height of the Incan empire, legend has it that Incan warriors would consume maca before entering into battle. This would make them fiercely strong. But after conquering a city the Incan soldiers were prohibited from using maca, to protect the conquered women from their powerful sexual impulses. Thus as far back as 500 years ago, macas reputation for enhancing strength, libido and fertility was already well established in Peru.
Today, macas popularity is very much on the increase, as people discover that the plant really does boost libido, sexual function and overall energy. Acreage in Peru dedicated to Maca cultivation is increasing every year to meet demand, and a number of scientists have turned their attention to the properties of the root. In Peru, maca is used by men and by women who want to put more fire into their sex lives. And in the U.S., Europe and Japan, dietary supplements containing maca are gaining ardent devotees.
Maca Nutrition
What natural ingredients in maca promote its reputed sex-enhancing effects? In-depth analysis of maca conducted in 1998 by Dr. Qun Yi Zheng and his colleagues at PureWorld Botanicals shows that maca contains about 10 percent protein, almost 60 percent carbohydrate, and an assortment of fatty acids. These ingredients are common and nothing special. But the investigators also discovered two groups of novel compounds, the macamides and the macaenes. These agents are believed to be directly responsible for macas sex-boosting powers.
To test this idea, researchers conducted a series of controlled animal experiments, the results of which were published in the April 2000 issue of the medical journal Urology. Rodents fed MacaPure extract, which contains a concentration of macamides and macaenes, demonstrated greatly increased energy and stamina. The animals also exhibited a striking increase in sexual activity as compared with non-maca-fed animals, or those fed lesser amounts of macamides and macaenes. So how does this translate to humans? Individuals who consume maca also get sexual results. Men and women with low libido feel a boost in sexual desire, and men with erectile problems notice marked improvement in sexual function.
Maca Use in Peru
In Peru, maca is a food. At the Third Annual Maca Festival in Churin, Peru, we sampled numerous products made with the sex-enhancing root. Peruvians make cookies, cakes, hot porridge, chips and blender drinks with maca root, which has a pleasant flavor similar to graham flour.
At several booths, women were making maca blender drinks. Maca roots soaked in jars of water, and the tables were laden with all the ingredients for a drink. The typical shake includes a couple of soaked maca roots and a little bit of the soak water, a handful of fresh papaya (trucked up from the warm lowlands), some condensed milk, an egg, honey and vanilla, all put together with vigor and smiles. I asked a number of people why they used maca, but one woman stands out in my mind. She smiled at my question and replied, Well, for the sex, of course.
Doctors Comment on Maca
Users arent the only ones making comments about maca. The root and its extracts are used in medical practice in Peru. In the November 1988 Townsend Letter for Doctors, physicians were quoted regarding the therapeutic and salutary uses of maca. Doctor Hugo Malaspina, M.D., a cardiologist practicing complementary medicine in Lima, Peru, has been using maca in his practice for 10 years.
Malaspina first found out about maca through a group of sexually active older men who were taking the herb with good results. One of this group started taking maca and found he was able to perform satisfactorily in a sexual relationship with a lady friend. Soon everyone in the group began drinking the powdered maca as a beverage and enjoying the boost that the root was giving their hormonal functions. I have several of these men as patients, and their improvement prompted me to find out more about maca and begin recommending it to my other patients.
Another Peruvian physician, Doctor Aguila Calderon, M.D., is the former dean of the Faculty of Human Medicine at the National University of Federico Villarreal in Lima. Doctor Calderon uses maca for male impotence, erectile dysfunction, menopausal symptoms and general fatigue, and claims good results.
Arizona physician Gary Gordon, M.D., former president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine, is also a maca supporter. We all hear rumors about various products like maca. But using this Peruvian root myself, I personally experienced a significant improvement in erectile tissue response. I call it natures answer to Viagra.
What I see in maca is a means of normalizing our steroid hormones like testosterone, progesterone and estrogen. Therefore it has the facility to forestall the hormonal changes of aging. It acts on men to restore them to a healthy functional status in which they experience a more active libido.
How Much Maca Should You Take?
Keep in mind that maca is a food, and is not used in tiny quantities. Most supplement companies that are selling maca are putting about 500 milligrams of ground, dried maca in each capsule. Some recommend three capsules daily, some six.
I believe that many people think of herbs like drugs, and assume that small amounts will do some good. In most cases, thats not true. As a rule, consumers take too little of most herbs to derive the benefits those herbs can impart. Rare is the herb that works in small doses. And many herbal product labels offer dosage recommendations based not on efficacy, but on price.
To be consistent with Peruvian use youd take a minimum of six to ten 500-milligram capsules of powdered maca daily, equal to 3,000 to 5,000 milligrams of maca. You can certainly take more. You can also obtain powdered maca root under some brands. With those products, you can toss a tablespoon full into a blender drink every day and enjoy maca the way the Peruvians do.
MacaPure, which is a standardized, concentrated extract of maca, is a different story. Companies selling MacaPure are recommending one 450-milligram capsule of MacaPure extract twice daily, equal to 900 milligrams of MacaPure extract. I personally think that four to five capsules (between 1,800 and 2,250 milligrams) daily is the right range.
The more maca or maca extract you consume, the more benefit you are likely to get. In toxicity studies conducted in the U.S., maca showed absolutely no toxicity and no adverse pharmacologic effects. In animal studies, the more maca animals consume, the stronger and more sexually active they become. You can be generous with the amounts of maca products you take. With maca, you have a safe, effective, nontoxic way to significantly boost your sexual function, without the hazards of prescription drugs.
[Editor's note: While natural herbs can have many positive effects on your health, including restoring or improving your sex drive, you should discuss the use of specific herbs with your doctor. Most herbs are safe on their own but your doctor can help you know if they can have potential adverse interactions with other medications you may be taking or other health conditions you have.]
I would again like to thank Chris and refer you to his excellent website, Medicinehunter.com.

Basics of Computed Tomography

Computed Tomography also known as computed axial tomography, or CAT scan, medical technology that uses X rays and computers to produce three-dimensional images of the human body. Unlike traditional X rays, which highlight dense body parts, such as bones, CT provides detailed views of the body's soft tissues, including blood vessels, muscle tissue, and organs, such as the brain. While conventional X rays provide flat two-dimensional images, CT images depict a cross-section of the body.

The CT scanner contains an X-ray source, which emits beams of X rays; an X-ray detector, which monitors the number of X rays that strike various parts of its surface; and a computer. The source and detector face each other on the inside of the scanner ring and are mounted so that they rotate around the rim of the scanner. Beams from the X-ray source pass through the patient and are recorded on the other side by the detector. As the source and detector rotate in a 360 circle around the patient, X-ray emissions are recorded from many angles. The resulting data are sent to the computer, which interprets the information and translates it into images that appear as cross-sections on a television monitor. By moving the patient within the scanner, a series of parallel images, called slices can be obtained. Doctors analyze a series of slices to understand the three-dimensional structure of the body.

To enhance an image, patients may be given an injection of a substance that will increase the contrast between different tissues. The patient may also be asked to drink a liquid that makes intestines more
clearly visible in the CT scan. Contrast agents are commonly used for scans of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. The speed at which CT slices are obtained has increased dramatically since this technology was developed during the late 1960s and early 1970s by British engineer Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield and American physicist Allan MacLeod Cormack. The first CT scanner required 4.5 minutes of scanning and 1.5 minutes of computer reconstruction to generate a single slice. The latest generation of CT scanners create a slice in fraction of a second.

CT was first used to view the tissues of the brain, and this is still its most frequent application. CT of the brain can show if an accident victim has sustained a brain injury, or if bleeding is occurring in the brain of a stroke victim. CT is also commonly used to diagnose disorders involving the chest, abdomen, spine, and pelvis. CT may be used to determine the location and size of a cancerous tumor and whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Newer applications for CT include CT angiography, which provides detailed images of the interior of small blood vessels.

Some experts once expected that CT would be replaced by the newer technology of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which uses magnetically charged protons within the body to create diagnostic images. Nevertheless, CT continues to have several advantages over MRI, including lower cost, wider availability, shorter examination time, superior imaging of the chest and abdomen, and the ability to create images without the strong magnetic field required by MRI. At present, CT and MRI are complementary, rather than competitive technologies.

SPIRAL C.T. (SCT)

Spiral C.T. (SCT) with slip ring technology had a dramatic impact on the approach to C.T. scanning since its introduction, especially at 'speed' of scanning. Spiral C.T. allows 3-D imaging that is useful for vascular imaging imaging of hollow viscera especially the virtual endoscopy has become a reality with SCT. The new hardware and software packages and computer guided Automatic Scanning Technique (C.A.S.T) allows monitoring real time contrast enhancement following administration of I.V. contrast in target organs or vessels (not bolus contrast medium advance), which in turn reduces the amount of C.M. to be used.

Spiral C.T. had a dramatic impact of change of protocols in the form of change in parameters, length of spiral exposure, inter relationship between pitch and collimators, 3-D image displays and above all, proper understanding of I.V. contrast dynamics when compared to C.C.T.. In C.C.T., scans are generally performed with 2 seconds scan time and an interscan delay (ISD) of 6-7 seconds. But in SCT not only the scan but also the ISD for a long length of a segment of the body has been eliminated by volumetric scanning. SCT is expected to replace the CCT eventually by volumetric scanning due to its wide spread clinical applications and acceptance.Such ultrafast scanning has virtually eliminated artifacts occurring as a result of motion. Spatial and contrast resolutions are superior with SCT than CCT.

There are certain limitations of low end SCT. These are limitations of mAs (especially in large patients) in whom scan time have to be increased to 1.5 times. Otherwise with lower mAs, the images are excessively grainy, only higher MHU tubes and refinement of detector technology will decrease these limitations.

IMPORTANCE OF SPIRAL C.T. IN COmputerised Tomography Angiography

The area in which spiral scanning has made the greatest impact is in vascular imaging. CT Angiography is a minimally invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. CT angiography has been shown to be effective in a number of vascular systems including the renal arteries, the aorta and its main branches, the cerebral circulation, the portal venous system, and the pulmonary arteries. Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) and surface rendering were the 3-D techniques which had been primarily applied to CT angiographic applications. Both of these techniques have important shortcomings which ultimately limit the clinical usefulness of the resulting images. But volume rendering is becoming the preferred 3-D rendering technique for CT angiography.

In CT angiography (CTA), computed tomography using a contrast material produces the detailed pictures. CT imaging uses special x-ray equipment to produce multiple images and a computer to join them together in cross-sectional views. A firm understanding of fundamental principles underlying CT angiography including spiral CT acquisition, image processing, and image display are required in order to get consistently excellent results over a wide range of clinical applications. One of the most compelling advantages of CT angiography is the ability to provide all of the information which previously required two or more radiological studies which may, in the case of conventional angiography, be much more expensive than CT. Image processing techniques such as volume rendering enhance this ability, allowing the radiologist and clinician to interactively explore different aspects of the dataset to address many specific questions which impact patient management.

Vitaliy called me from Russia today. Well, he called me, then I called him back thru Skype. Dont we love Skype? 7 cents/min to talk to him.
He is doing awesome, just finished  a 3- or 4-day trek up a mountain. Said they are acclimating to the altitude. Its snow/ice climbing there where he is. Says the base camp has a doctor and other emergency personnel. He is ecstatic about it all and doing an awesome job. Sheesh, he is so athletic. Hes in his element.
Fasting is going well. My mouth is so dry all day. I think I need to drink more water all the time. Im doing juices, too.
The main lesson of this fast so far: I am actually learning by experience something we know and hear. You have to be today who you want to be.
I have to be today the person I want to be. I have to make small choices all day today in order to be the person i want to be today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, next decade . . . .
OK, I want to be a thin, healthy person. I go throughout my day, and before this fast, I made lots of choices all day that were things I wanted in the momentlike to eat that chocolate, drink that cappuchino, eat that leftover banana bread, etc.choices that gratified me for a moment, but stole away the person I want to be.
I rob myself.
So today, for example, who am I? I want to be a healthy persons my goal. All throughout the day, small temptations come up to eat this bite, drink that thing. And i have to say, no, I will not, I will be right now the person that I desire to be.
Self-discipline.
Ouch.
But the end is pleasure, because in the end, and all throughout the day, I choose, by the grace and power of God, to be the person He wants me to be, that I want to be.
Wow. Its rewarding. Not the fleeting reward of a second, but a fuller satisfaction.

?
My first time through breast cancer the highways of treatment over which I traveled were the typical cut, poison, and burn routine.?First the surgeon extracted the tumor and surrounding tissue in a lumpectomy.?Then I endured a chemotherapy called CMF, a toxic, colorless cocktail of three chemicals:?cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil. ?Finally, my breast was radiated for six weeks to seal the fate of any remaining cancerous cells lurking within. ?This article focuses on my experience with chemo.
?
The most common short-term side effects of chemotherapy include fatigue, hair loss, nausea, mucositis (irritation of the lining of the mouth and intestines), increased risk of infection (due to low white-blood-cell counts), and anemia (due to low red-blood-cell counts).?
?
I didnt experience all of these side effects.?My hair thinned, but did not disappear.?My blood-cell counts decreased, but not so much that I couldnt take a cross-country two-week vacation.?I didnt suffer any infections during the entire three months of chemo treatment.
?
Between chemotherapy infusions the technicians religiously took blood samples from me like overeager vampire bats.?The blood draws were performed to determine if my red- and white-blood-cell counts were too low for me to be treated. ?Because my blood was being checked so frequently, my good arm (the one without the lymph nodes removed from the armpit) was feeling the effects of these extra pokes in addition to the I.V. pricks.?Fortunately, my veins did not collapse.
?
The nurses frequently solved the I.V. problem by sticking my arm in a bucket of hot water to make the veins more accessible.?While this technique was not fool-proof, by Gods grace it usually worked and the veins in my arm were able to tough out the entire treatment.?
?
While I did not lose all my hair, the CMF concoction stopped my periods cold about one month after the first infusion.?My research to uncover information on breast cancer revealed that CMF was more likely to trigger menopause than regimens containing Adriamycin (chemical name:?doxorubicin) or Taxol/Taxotere (chemical names:?paclitaxel/docetaxel). ??But Adriamycin is a particularly harsh chemo drug, more so than CMF, causing certain hair loss, markedly reduced white- and red-blood cell counts, and usually severe nausea.?And Taxol/Taxotere can cause peripheral neuropathy, a numbness in fingers and toes.
?
As a normal ten-year period of menopause was condensed into a few months due to chemo, my body found itself adjusting to a sudden reduction in estrogen, leading to night sweats, hot flashes, and mood swings.?Not to mention bone loss, insomnia, and risk to the heart.?It was difficult to determine whether menopause or chemo treatment was causing any particular symptom.?I used a Chillow foam pillow for night sweats, melatonin for inducing sleep, and calcium and Vitamin D to prevent bone loss.
?
Exhaustion was another challenge.?To prevent fatigue often accompanying chemotherapy, patients should initiate mild-to-moderate exercise such as walking 10-20 minutes every day. ?Physical activity after treatment not only can improve fatigue, but offers psychological benefits. ?Breast cancer patients who exercise feel more resilient and less depressed than those who are sedentary.
?
When I was tired from lack of sleep and did not eat or exercise properly, I noticed I couldnt concentrate well.?This mental fog, commonly known as chemo brain, causes temporary confusion and inability to do calculations, as well as mild forgetfulness.?I addressed my concentration and memory problems by making lists, leaving messages on electronic calendars or voice mail to remind myself of things, and using a daily planner to jot down notes regarding urgent tasks.?
?
As to dietary alternatives during chemo, a physician can recommend their use only if they have been proven effective for their intended purpose. ?My own anecdotal evidence is that supplements (such as melatonin and iron) can help.?To me, their sole benefit was to alleviate certain side effects of Western medicine.?With diminished side-effects, I was a happier patient, willing to brave continued treatment with clinically proven drugs.
?
When I conducted cyberspace research to locate information on breast cancer, I consulted only reliable websites.?Those displaying the HONcode logo are considered to be more reputable than websites without it.?This logo represents a certification that the website complies with the Health on the Net principles, designed to increase the accuracy, objectivity, and trustworthiness of Internet health information.?
?
As you can see, this tale of three chemos, C, M, and F, is not one of woe.?Nor is it usually a tale of total hair loss.?Once chemo is through, the breast cancer patient is nearing the final stretch on the road to wellness.

Obama is now wanting to add a Health Insurance czar….that is close to 20 czars. Remember these guys have a lot of power and are only accountable to the president and that is the problem. What is a “Czar”? A Czar is a monarch, an Emperor or a King who answers to no one except God. Was Obama elected as our GOD? Does the Constitution give the President the right to appoint Czars? No, it forbids this. According to Article II, Section 2, the President does not have the right to appoint public Ministers without the Advice and Consent of the Senate. No Senate hearing were ever held to evaluate or approve Obama’s czars. He has simply appointed them and Congress said nothing.

Senior Democrat Says Obama’s Czars Unconstitutional

Last week President Obama appointed yet another “czar” with massive government power, answering only to him. Even before this latest appointment, the top-ranking Democrat in the Senate wrote President Obama a letter saying that these czars are unconstitutional. President Obama’s “czar strategy” is an unprecedented power grab centralizing authority in the White House, outside congressional oversight and in violation of the Constitution.

As of last week, Czar Kenneth Feinberg has the authority to set the pay scale for executives at any company receiving government money (and how many aren’t, these days?). Czar Feinberg has the power to say that someone’s pay is excessive, and to make companies cut that pay until the czar is pleased. ( I might add can you say “socialism/fascism “?)

Congress did not give Czar Feinberg this authority. For that matter, Congress has not authorized any of the czars that President Barack Obama has created. Over the past thirty years presidents have each had one or two czars for various issues, and once the number went as high as five. But now, by some counts President Obama has created sixteen czars, and there may be more on the way. Each of these has enormous government power, and answers only to the president.

Ever since this practice of appointing czars began years ago, it has always been considered possible that they are all unconstitutional.

But President Obama has taken this to an unprecedented level, to the point where these appointments are dangerous to our constitutional regime. This has become too much for the longest-serving senator in U.S. history to stomach. Democratic Senator Robert Byrd is the president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate.

Senator Byrd wrote a letter to President Obama in February, criticizing the president’s strategy of creating czars to manage important areas of national policy. Senator Byrd said that these appointments violate both the constitutional system of checks and balances and the constitutional separation of powers, and is a clear attempt to evade congressional oversight. (And he's right)

And Senator Byrd is exactly correct. The Constitution commands that government officers with significant authority (called “principal officers”) are nominated by the president but then are subject to a confirmation vote by the U.S. Senate. And principal officers include not only cabinet-level department heads, but go five levels deep in executive appointments, to include assistant secretaries and deputy undersecretaries.

Inferior officers are appointed either by the president, cabinet-level officers, or the courts. But even then, the Constitution specifies that only Congress can authorize the making of such appointments. For these inferior officers, only Congress can create their offices, and also specify who appoints them. And such officers are still answerable to Congress. They are subject to subpoena to testify before Congress, and Congress holds the power of the purse by making annual appropriations for their division or program.

White House officials, by contrast, cannot be compelled to appear before Congress and testify.

My doctor put me on anit-depressants for anxiety and related depression but everytime i go to take them I can't! I have a close friend whose asked me not to take them becuase of the bad side effects i had with effexor ( they put me into a depression) but latley I ve been having trouple with my sleeping and thats the reason why my doctor put me on them to help with the anxiety, depression and my sleep. I respect my friend so much that i cant do it but its not getting better (its still about the same) Would you listen to your friend whose there to help listen and to talk with you to help or my doctor whose just prescribing drugs ?
Answer:
Is your friend a doctor? Didn't think so. I'm sure your friend means well, but your doctor went to medical school, and spend years learning about how medications effect people and when they should be prescribed. He also has a lot of experience with how drugs effect people. If you're not satisfied with your current medication, talk to your doctor about changing it, but don't just stop taking it. Failing to take medication as prescribed can have serious consequences.

You should never stop taking antidepressants without first talking to your doctor, as stopping abruptly can cause significant, and potential dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Also, for anti-depressants to work properly, they have to be taken daily, not just when you feel like it. They take several weeks to achieve their full therapeutic effect, and skipping a few doses can reset that, undermining the efficacy of the treatment.

It's important that you discuss changes in your medication with your doctor, rather than simply changing it yourself. If you are experiencing negative side effects from the medication, then call your doctor and tell him what's going on, and he'll can discuss other options with you. There are many different types of antidepressants, and having had a bad experience with one does not mean you'll have the same experience with others. It's worth at least trying the current medication before deciding you don't want to take it. It generally takes 2-8 weeks for antidepressants to take effect, so if at all possible, you should try it for several weeks before deciding if you want to continue taking it.

I was recently diagnosed "severly depressed" and am seeking out help. I'm going to therapy %26 am being sent to a psychiatrist to get me started on medications. How long before I start to feel better? I am worried because I am increasingly losing hope as days go on...

Thanks
Answer:
hello jit, now, you just hang on there now... you must have been dealing with this for some time now and with help on the way is no time to give up, but to have hope! being in therapy is a great move, in the meantime, you can vent so freely with a good T, don't hold anything back. then make calls, if need be, to see how soon you will be seeing the psychiatrist to get your med(s) started. anti-depressants can take up to a full 8 weeks to be absorbed by the brain, though some people can notice a lift in mood sooner than that. but you will no doubt will be put on an "introductory dose" to see if you tolerate the med okay... then adjustments start, to where you are on a "maintenance dose". you will need to be patient during this process, i hope you will be, you need not suffer needlessly with this, it does get better! good luck.

Depression can often be treated with therapy alone, but some patients do decide to try prescription medication. The most commonly prescribed medications are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclics, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It can take a while to find the right medication or combination of medications for each person, but all prescription depression medications have a risk of minor, or occasionally major, side effects.
If prescription medications arent working as well as youd like them to, or if youre unhappy with the side effects and risks that accompany them, you may decide to explore herbal remedies for depression. There are many natural cures for depression available in the marketplace, but its best to look for ones with a few key ingredients:
St. Johns Wort is one of the most effective natural ingredients for treating depression. In fact, in some countries like Germany, St. Johns Wort outsells many of the major prescription anti-depressive medications. The active ingredients in St. Johns Wort are believed to naturally boost serotonin levels, which helps lift spirits and ease depression.
Passion flower is a natural ingredient that is often used to treat sleep disorders and anxiety. It helps to soothe and calm, and when combined with St. Johns Wort can be a wonderful aid in treating depression naturally.
Depression is a life-consuming condition, but you do not have to suffer quietly. If you think have a depressive disorder, seek professional help to find the treatment options that are best for you and your condition, whether they include prescription medication or natural remedies for depression, and remember to explore a variety of options before making a decision.

The Ecosystems of Ancient Egypt
The boundaries of ancient Egypt spanned from the First Cataract of the Nile River in the south to the Delta in the north and from the Red Sea in the east to the Western Oases.  Life abounds in ancient Egypt, allowing nearly anything to be grown in the fertile soils along the banks of the Nile and in the Oasis depressions of the Western Desert (Nunn: 1996, 8).
Key to the survival of the Nile Valley civilization was the Nile River.  Every year, thanks to the monsoons in Ethiopia, the Nile flooded its banks, causing a rush of water carrying a new layer of silt to cover the nutrient deprived soil from the previous year.  The land affected directly by the inundation of the Nile was known as the Black Land or Kemet in the ancient language.  The deserts and other areas not directly affected by the flood were known as the Red Land or Deshret (Nunn: 1996, 8).  While the Nile Valley depends on the Nile’s annual flood, there is no connection between the River Nile and the Oases.  The Oases, in fact, depend entirely on natural groundwater, as will be discussed later (Heinl: 1989).
The Oases are celebrated throughout history as jewels of fertility.  This is true, but the truth is accentuated by the surrounding bleakness of the desert.  When approaching the Oases, one sees nothing besides the dusty, lifeless golden sands of the Sahara.  The monotony is broken by little jewels of green that cling to life in the middle of an unforgiving oven.  In antiquity, such plants as dates, grapes for wine, olives, doum palms, and acacia trees have been grown in the Oases with great success.  These crops, also grown in the Nile Valley, were successful due to the fertility of the Oases (Giddy: 1987, 4).  If the annual inundation was good enough in the Nile Valley, food was never a worry for the ancient Egyptians and most years the flood was ample enough to ensure a good food supply for the rest of the year.  Also, if the fertility of the Oases held true, again there was an ample supply of food.  This abundance of food left a great deal of time allotted for other pursuits, among these writing, artistry, and medicine (Nunn: 1996, 23).
The Oases of Egypt consist of five major geological depressions.  From North to South, these depressions, or Oases, are Siwa, Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhleh and Kharga (Giddy: 1987, 1).  The Oases are actually located approximately 300 meters below the Libyan Plateau on which the Nile Valley is located (Kleindienst: 1999, 8).  These depressions, located at the base of the Libyan Plateau escarpment, rest on a bed of sandstone known as the Nubian Sandstone Series.  Water is supplied to these depressions through a bed of sandstone known as the Taref formation, which may contain the thickest ground water layer in the world (Giddy: 1987, 1).  The Taref sandstone is highly porous and is incased in shale creating a perfect natural aquifer that can carry water for miles without much water escaping (Giddy: 1987, 4).  This sandstone aquifer underlies a great deal, if not the entirety, of the desert, but is only accessible to the depressions that dip into the aquifer, exposing the water enough to allow life to flourish in the middle of the Sahara (Giddy: 1987, 1).  The water in this natural aquifer is ancient water, hailing from Pre-dynastic times when the Sahara was humid.
