Last post looked at Galatians and 1 Thessalonians. Now for 1 Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 1:13, 17-18, 22-25
Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? . . . . For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. . . . For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
I do not see how it is possible to read a criminal or religious trial and execution into the above references to the crucifixion of Christ, unless by overfamiliarity and divine fiat.
These are among the earliest references to the crucifixion of Jesus, according to the most widely accepted dating (that is, that the Pauline letters were composed from the mid first -century c.e.).
The notion of the crucifixion of Christ at this point is that it is a spiritual power and form of divine wisdom.
It is not as if we have any evidence that there was a real criminal trial and execution over which early disciples of Jesus were confused and embarrassed, and that they later rationalized as some form of spiritual power or . Note, it is not the resurrection that infuses spiritual power or wisdom, but the crucifixion. One could understand confused and embarrassed followers pointing to earlier miracles or the subsequent resurrection on which to rationalize and vindicate their faith. But that is not what we find here at all.
The second half of the above is even less consistent with the concept of an historical event.
The reason the Jews rejected the message of the crucifixion was because it was not a public miracle. The Jews require a sign for this reason the crucifixion was a stumblingblock. To judge by Pauls statements here, it is as if there never were any conflict between Jesus and the Jews over blasphemous claims or violations of legal codes or envy over Jesus abilities to pull in large crowds. As far as Paul is aware, the reason the Jews do not accept Jesus as their Messiah is because the sign of his Messiahship was not a public miracle.
Had there been an historical crucifixion somewhat along the broad outline we read in the decades later canonical gospels, surely the reason the Jews rejected Jesus was because they believed he was a blasphemer or demon-possessed deceiver and spoke against the Temple and taught people to violate of the Mosaic law.
The reason given here for the Greeks rejecting the Messiahship of Jesus is just as problematic if we insist on a gospel like narrative of a crucifixion.
Pauls reason for the Greeks rejecting Jesus was because they could not see any philosophical wisdom in a crucifixion. Note that there is no hint in Pauls mind that a crucifixion might actually indicate criminality of the victim.
Paul is saying that Jews and Greeks do not accept the crucifixion because it was either not a public miracle or it was not a philosophical tenet. That speaks volumes for what the message of the crucifixion was and was not. It was a theological concept claiming to be a miraculous power and secret wisdom for those who were called by God to understand. It was not an historical event involving a trial over violation of civil or religious laws.
If we insist on arguing that Pauls view was a rationalization and attempt to deny a real historical event, then we are in danger of arguing from mere assumption and in defiance of the earliest evidence.
(I understand that sometimes later evidence can point to earlier events, but it must also be consistent with the earlier evidence. Mere assumption and hypotheses pulled out of imaginative airs cannot replace material evidence.)
1 Corinthians 2:1-2
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
Pauls message about the crucifixion was the testimony of God. It was not the testimony of men or other apostles or eyewitnesses or official reports or the grapevine. It was not the testimony of a Jesus in a vision. It was the testimony of God.
This testimony of God was Jesus Christ and him crucified. Jesus Christ, and him crucified, was not from eyewitness or second or third hand historical testimony. It was a message from God.
1 Corinthians 2:7-8
But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Here Paul returns to the message or testimony of God, and the wisdom of God which he earlier explained was Christ crucified.
Had the princes of this world known the wisdom of God they would not have crucified Christ. Princes of the world. Not the governor Pilate of the Jews. Not King Herod or the Jewish Sanhedrin of the Jews. Pauline letters elsewhere speak of struggling against higher powers in spiritual warfare. Daniel (and apocalyptic Second Temple authors) understood Princes of this world to be angelic powers.
Of course one can interpret this to mean that the angelic powers directed Pilate to crucify Jesus. But that is to read the earlier evidence through the theology and narrative of the later evidence.
Lets see first of all how much understanding we can gain of Pauls message by examining it one archaeological layer at a time and slowly working our way up.

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 3:58 PM

Lately these posts have just been writing themselves.
For the record, this post is going to be 1% running. 0% veganism. and 99% are you kidding me?!
Also, if you have a certain relatively untainted perception of me as a person and dont want that ruined (read: my parents), dont read this post. For the rest of you that see my shortcomings and annoyances somewhat charming, do read on.
SO! Last year I made a bumper sticker. In a moment of perhaps divine inspiration a thought came to me. It said, Fuck this. Im going running. and I thought, What a great idea for a bumper sticker! Man! I want a bumper sticker that says that! Of course, I know no one else has actually made, or would make, that bumper sticker, so what else was I to do but put my Do It Yourself punk ethics to practice and make it myself! So thats what I did. And since the shortest print run for bumper stickers was 250, I had to go ahead and make 250 bumper stickers, which with the most meager of marketing promotions has sent them overseas and across the nation. Still, I have a lot left, which is a good thing because these suckers get people really riled up and Ive actually had it ripped off my car twice. Im assuming this was done because of the word and not because someone was infuriated that I wanted to go running, but hey, people are weird, ya never know.
Anyways, this morning I did my 20 miles out at Eagle Creek, picked up a couple soy iced lattes for myself and Michelle for her birthday and was quite satisfied with how my morning was starting out. Continuing my drive home I stop behind some cars at a stop light and a large truck pulls up along side of me. Just then my spidey senses started tingling and I got the feeling someone was trying to get my attention. I look over to my left to see a middle aged man mouthing something towards me. I turned down my radio, turned his way, and the conversation went like this.
s that?
- I cant believe you have profanity on your car. said in a tone of voice that conveyed that he actually COULD believe that I had profanity on my car and saw a prime opportunity to let me know how righteous he is about his place in the world. He then followed that up with
- I have children.
Without but a few moments to come up with a witty comeback, I turned to him and said, with a tone of defensive arrogance,
believe it!
The light turns green and just as he starts to pull away, he very matter of factly replies,
- You should be arrested.
I laughed, but unfortunately I dont think he saw me.
See, Ive gotten a lot of unexpected responses to this bumper sticker, most quite surprising, and the experiences have actually afforded me the fortune of giving this dynamic a lot of thinking, but this one really takes the cake.
This is what I dont get. So many people have bumper stickers and although most are humorous (Id like to believe mine falls into that category), many are legitimately offensive in that their message calls for a direct intrusion into others lives. Most of those are political stickers that lean towards homophobia, racism or something of the like. Granted, the owners of those stickers probably get a lot of verbal flack, but again, those stickers are about actual ISSUES. Mine is about running. Now, I know people arent responding to the act of running, but thats the point. If they are simply responding to the word , then surely they must live extremely sheltered lives in that a simple word solicits such anger and verbal response.
And geezs just a word. Now, Im not in the school of thought that seeks to devalue profanities of their power. The word is a very powerful word. Then again, so is Cunt, Fag, Bitch, Retarded, etc., but most people use those with the same carelessness they utilize for culturally normative language. So yes, is a powerful word.which is why it works so great! Its strong, its powerful, and its EXPRESSIVE. The power of the word gives the user the ability to really convey the strength of their emotions. For example, imagine I called you a jerk. Big deal right? But what if I said, re a fuckin jerk. Or even, Fuck you, you motherfucking jerk. Little different yeah?
But it goes deeper than that. A lot of people get offended by the word because they accept that it holds an inherently NEGATIVE association, but how many times have you said, Fuck yeah! or That was fuckin awesome! So, not only does the term embody a deeply negative association, but it can also hold a deeply positive association.which SHOULD be apparent in my bumper sticker. Wait, thats not true actually. The sticker doesnt say m going FUCKING running. Its says Fuck this. What actually is, is up for the reader to decide. So actually, it does hold a negative association in this specific usage, though I would argue it is part of a more positive whole in that Ive taken a negative scenario and changed it to something positive.running! I mean, it could be worse. It could say, Fuck this. Lets get high! I wonder what part of that sticker would make people more angry. Maybe the reference to drugs would even make the profanity pale in comparison.
When I really think about it, I actually dont think the negative reactions have anything to do with the word at all..or at least fundamentally. I think peoples reactions more has to do with the perceived arrogance of using the term publicly and casually. I think people see the sticker as an affront to our dominant cultures moral foundation, where everyone loves jesus, loves america, supports the troops, goes to church, doesnt cheat on their wives, and most certainly under no circumstance whatsoeverEVER uses profanity (But guess what.i never signed your dominant cultures social contract). I think that because Ive used profanity publicly is one thing, but because Ive used it CASUALLY is what really freaks people out. I mean, PEOPLE HAVE CHILDREN! (like me). What will these wholesome parents ever do if *gasp* a child asks them about the world!!! I mean, they might have to EXPLAIN it and exert INFLUENCE on them! The horror! I mean, Kids are to be put in a bubble and shown videos of veggie tales until they are old enough to have intercourse only for the sake of procreation.duh.
Since I brought up moral foundation, lets make a point about that as well. Obviously my sticker about running offended this mans moral foundation, which by his need to point out the of the sticker to me, implies that his moral foundation is the CORRECT moral foundation and Im simply misguided. I mean, if he wasnt so confident that he was undeniably right, he wouldnt have said anything right? I had committed such a serious offense to his moral foundation that he went as far as saying I should be and presumably thrown in jail, my freedom revoked. Now, I really think that saying I should be arrested was just a desperate attempt to express his frustration that he disapproved of my bumper sticker but couldnt (or wouldnt) actually do anything to stop it from existing, but I also find it amusing that the very concept that I should be arrested runs deeply opposed to MY foundation (if I believed in the concept) in that I am an anarchist and reject the use of law (read: moral force), but of course, thats just absurd right?  I mean, its one thing to have an offensive bumper sticker, but is the proper response to being offended by a mere expression, no matter how uncomfortable it makes one feel, be to take away someones freedom and physically restrain them? Freedom of speech what?
Ultimately, this stuff cracks me up. I know the people that are so incredibly offended by a sticker about running, a sticker that merely expresses my frustration towards the mundane and turns it into the positive act of RUNNING, are simply scared, insecure individuals who dont know how to separate themselves from the parts of the world they dont agree with. Thats coolcause while they are losing sleep over their inability to actually do anything about the world, probably driving themselves straight into a heart attack,  Im out there confidently enjoying myself and FUCKING RUNNING! Sorry bout cha.
By the way.anyone want a bumper sticker?

A study of hundreds of women from four hospitals showing that lysophospholipids are provide in extravagant levels in women with ovarian cancer but low in healthy women - a notable finding - could lead to a humble blood trial for ovarian cancer. This is a offer hospitality to development in the manipulate of cancer research because lack of an effective screening evaluate for ovarian cancer creates mortality rates that are higher than for many other cancers.
This finding could be incredibly important in our run-in against ovarian cancer, says Rebecca Sutphen, M.D., of H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center Research Institute, capital funds author of the three-year study funded by the American Cancer Society whose results are published in the July 7 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers Barring.
Two thirds of the patients are diagnosed when the cancer is already advanced - Stage 3 or 4. At that point, the cure rate is exclusively in the range of 25 percent. The problem has every been that we have no early detection plan, she explains.
The target of the Tampa Bay Ovarian Library was to conjure up if this group of lysophospholipids could potentially be productive as a detection examine. Almost all vigorous women have low levels of these substances. As for the patients, the vast majority of them have ripe levels of these substances.
The lysophospholipids were first identified as a budding biomarker by Yan Xu of the Cleveland Clinic, also an litterateur of the current study titled Lysophospholipids Are Aptitude Biomarkers of Ovarian Cancer. According to Sutphen, the Moffitt collaboration, which included the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center, is the oldest lessons to confirm Xus suspicion. The results were on because collection and transport of blood samples (in contrast to earlier studies) employed demanding standards for delivery and processing prior to liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy assay.
The project represents an unusually enormous collaboration among hospitals in the Tampa Bay locality. Doctors from Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Morton Undercover Convalescent home in Clearwater - a Moffitt attached hospital - and Tampa General Polyclinic in Tampa contributed to the swatting, as did community doctors from Bay Area Oncology in Tampa.
According to Brian R.G. Williams, Ph.D., chairman of cancer biology at The Cleveland Clinic, the investigate, which involved a large faction of patients, was conducted in a blinded manner. Dr. Xu and her colleagues did not advised of whether the samples were from patients with ovarian cancer or tonic individuals when they carried out the tests. Furthermore, lysopholipids were shown to decrease in patients following surgery in regard to their cancer. This suggests the later utility of the test will not only be in detecting early devise ovarian cancer which is many times missed at up to date but also in following patients after surgery to restrict for recurrence of disease. There are no other tests close by or at this the West End of evolution that can do this.
Ovarian cancer is a comparatively rare cancer, but because of its high mortality speed, it kills some 14,300 American women each year.
In 93 percent of the cases, the blood test was an accurate predictor of whether the girlfriend had ovarian cancer. Less than four percent of the 117 women studied could be characterized as false positives. But before the blood test is used as a mass screening puppet, researchers should find a combination of markers to get the correctness velocity up to 100 percent, Sutphen says.
If other indications of ovarian cancer can be identified and put together with the blood test for the lipids, the prophecy rate could be boosted to 100 percent accuracy, Sutphen suggests. Meanwhile, the blood analysis could potentially be used to wall grand-danger women.

Assalamualaikum, Ayahanda Tun,

Harap cadangan saya mendapat perhatian Ayahanda Tun.

The city of Palm Bay found a new management company to help run Patriot Charter.

Miami-based Academica takes over for Charter Schools USA immediately.

Last week the city and Charter Schools USA agreed to mutually part ways. They had been operating the school jointly since 2005.

Academica, which has been around since 1999, has schools in South Florida, Texas and Utah.

Deputy Mayor Milo Zonka said officials from the new management company have already met with faculty and information should be going out to parents today.

"This is how we wanted it, a very quick and short gap so we can get back to business," Zonka said. "Going into the fall, this gives me great confidence."

Patriot, which already serves about 750 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, is still going ahead with plans to start a ninth grade this fall, making it the first charter high school in Brevard.

The school, which was opened to help ease overcrowding in Palm Bay's public schools, has had a year of ups and downs.

Financial problems almost forced Patriot to close its doors last fall; this month, Patriot's staff celebrated news that the school had improved a letter grade from C to B.

In November, the school officially ran out of money and began to use reserves for expenses. To save the school, the city council agreed to refinance the school's $21 million bond, but only if the school received a B grade or better.

For years, the school hovered at a C grade, but this year, it moved up to a B.

According to Laughing Squid, an air sex show is a lot like air guitar, but instead of rocking out with an imaginary guitar, youre making sweet and/or filthy love with an imaginary sex partner. You choose a clip of music, you show up in whatever sort of wardrobe you like, and you come up on stage and show everyone how you do it. Or how you wish you could do it. Or how you once had it done to you. All orgasms have to be simulated (or at least arguably so). Other than that, youre free to do whatever it takes to impress the judges, the audience in the theater, and the world.

Well, maybe someday. But if you're like me, you've hear the phrase Pulitzer Prize winning poet, writer, photographer, etc. all the time and yet don't really know how much of a big deal it is or isn't. So here is a list of facts about the Pulitzer Prize so you'll be better prepared to understand what the deal is. It was on this day in 1917 that the first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded. Here are some things you might not have known about Pulitzer Prizes: They're announced each year in April and then awarded at Columbia University in May, during a luncheon at the campus library. Each Pulitzer Prize winner receives a $10,000 award and a certificate, except in the Public Service category, where the winner is given a gold medal. Only a newspaper, not an individual, can receive the Public Service prize for journalism. There are 21 Pulitzer categories. Two-thirds of the prizes (14) revolve around journalism. There are six for letters and drama (fiction, drama, history, biography, poetry, and general nonfiction), and there is one prize given for music. The Pulitzer Prize for fiction used to be called the Pulitzer Prize for the novel. The name was changed in 1948. Poet Robert Frost won the Pulitzer Prize four times. Playwright Eugene O'Neill also won four Pulitzer Prizes. The Pulitzer Prize is a very American award. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for the non-journalism Prizes. The exception to this is in the history category: a non-American can win the Pulitzer Prize if he or she wrote a book about the history of the United States. Foreign journalists can win Pulitzers if they write for a newspaper published in the United States. The New York Times holds the all-time record for number of Pulitzer Prizes received. The paper has collectively won 101 Pulitzers. Newspapers generally nominate themselves for Pulitzer Prizes. The fee for each entry is $50, and the material that the newspaper wants the prize board to consider must be accompanied by an entry form. An entry has to fit into one of the 21 categories; it can't be submitted on the grounds that it is just generally good. To be eligible, a paper must be published in the U.S. at least weekly. In 2009, for the first time, online-only news organizations were eligible for the Pulitzer. Before, it was restricted to print publications. Decisions about prize winners are made by the Pulitzer board in secret. Afterward, the board does not publicly discuss or defend its decisions.

Answer:
Okay, I know from experience that you will need to consult with someone else for ideas about how to handle this type of thing because anything you could come up with on your own will only create more issues. The person you consult should be living with you and care about your growing up unafraid of challenges and unforgiving of procrastination in the face of challenges. Good luck.

Saint Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Solemnity March 19, 2009

The just man was simply, joyfully, wholeheartedly obedient to Godin marrying Mary, in naming Jesus, in shepherding the precious pair to Egypt, in bringing them to Nazareth, in the undetermined number of years of quiet faith and courage.

Comment:
The Bible tells us nothing of Joseph in the years after the return to Nazareth except the incident of finding Jesus in the Temple (see Luke 2:4151). Perhaps this can be taken to mean that God wants us to realize that the holiest family was like every other family, that the circumstances of life for the holiest family were like those of every family, so that when Jesus mysterious nature began to appear, people couldnt believe that he came from such humble beginnings: Is he not the carpenters son? Is not his mother named Mary...? (Matthew 13:55a). It was almost as indignant as Can anything good come from Nazareth? (John 1:46b).

Quote:
He was chosen by the eternal Father as the trustworthy guardian and protector of his greatest treasures, namely, his divine Son and Mary, Josephs wife. He carried out this vocation with complete fidelity until at last God called him, saying: Good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord (St. Bernardine of Siena).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John-Paul II, Pope from 1978 to 2005
Redemptoris custos, 18-19 (trad. copyright Libreria Editrice Vaticana)
"Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home"
Addressing Joseph through the words of the angel, God speaks to him as the husband of the Virgin of Nazareth. What took place in her through the power of the Holy Spirit also confirmed in a special way the marriage bond which already existed between Joseph and Mary.
God's messenger was clear in what he said to Joseph: "Do not fear to take Mary your wife into your home." Hence, what had taken place earlier, namely, Joseph's marriage to Mary, happened in accord with God's will and was meant to endure. In her divine motherhood Mary had to continue to live as "a virgin, the wife of her husband" (cf. Lk 1:27).
In the words of the "annunciation" by night, Joseph not only heard the divine truth concerning his wife's indescribable vocation; he also heard once again the truth about his own vocation. This "just" man, who, in the spirit of the noblest traditions of the Chosen People, loved the Virgin of Nazareth and was bound to her by a husband's love, was once again called by God to this love.
"Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife" into his home (Mt 1:24); what was conceived in Mary was "of the Holy Spirit." From expressions such as these are we not to suppose that his love as a man was also given new birth by the Holy Spirit? Are we not to think that the love of God which has been poured forth into the human heart through the Holy Spirit (cf. Rm 5:5) molds every human love to perfection? This love of God also molds-in a completely unique way-the love of husband and wife, deepening within it everything of human worth and beauty, everything that bespeaks an exclusive gift of self, a covenant between persons, and an authentic communion according to the model of the Blessed Trinity.
A person with hemolytic anemia can also present with jaundice.A major concern with hemolytic anemia is maintenance of liver function.Intravascular extrinsic hemolytic anemia results from blood transfusion reactions.
Answer:
Hemoltyic Anemia is a breakdown of blood cells in the body, usually generic or aquired.In a normal person the the blood cells are are in a ratio of 90-120 in circulation.
The Spleen--Reticulo-Endothelial-- which I've had removed} is the is the organ for removing old %26 damaged blood cells.
When the ratio of RBC'S increase, the body compensates by producing more RBC'S thus developing anemia.
The breakdown product of the of the Hemoglobin[The Irion Containing Transporet Of Oxygen In The RBC'S] which accumlates %26 the level of Bilirubin is elevated in the blood, which causes Jaundice. Jaundice is the Yellow/ Brown skin you will see usually starting at the face %26 moving downward to the feet, due to the accumlation of RBC'S %26 the increased levels of Bilirubin[an excretion product for the body's excretion of the body's products, %26 that's what causes the yellow bruisws you see when Jaundice appears.
People like me who've had their Spleen removed have a hard time fighting of colds %26 viruses, as our bodies don't have a the capacity to get rid of old %26 damaged RBC's easily, therefore we have to be carefull when we get sick to take real good care of ourselves especially if we're allergic to penicillin as I am, as it's a good antibiotic for the body's imune systems in fighting viruses etc.
If you have Hemolytic Anemia please ask your Doctor for a tests to determine how bad you're H/Anemia is, as they're many tests now for determining it.
P.S. Fatigue is common sign of H/Anemia,which can later lead to Heart Failure.
Good-Health everyone--Stay Well.
Contrary to popular belief, aches and pains are not a typical part of aging. Age alone does not mean a person automatically experiences aches and pains. Pain can be a red flag that points to a disease, illness or injury. Any pain that interferes with the activities of daily life is worthy of attention. MayoClinic.com highlights a number of conditions that can cause major aches and pains as a person ages, and offers information on diagnosis, treatment, self-care and coping.
I've had a couple people asking me why I converted to the Catholic Church. My journey was a pretty long one with many twists and turns and bumpy roads. So here goes:
I grew up Southern Baptist. My earliests memories were of "big church", sitting next to older people who would give me candy, Sunday School, and children's choir. I thank God he gave me a great-grandmother who made sure I got that early religious foundation. I attended the First Baptist Church in Colorado City until I was nine and moved to my mother's, who'd just gotten married. Over the next 10 years until I was eighteen I was usually the only person in my family to attend church. But as the story usually goes, after I graduated, my attendance in church went WAY down.
The next four years became a time of partial laziness and exploration. I wasn't sure if I believed in God anymore so I told people I was an atheist, even though I really wasn't. I still believed in a way (I now believe God wasn't going to give up on me, but was just patiently waiting for me to return.). I read about other religions, but didn't really buy what they believed.
My first taste of the Catholic faith happened when I was 22. I was unemployed at the time and feeling completely depressed. I was laying in bed one morning and came across EWTN's Daily Mass while channel surfing. I had never seen a Mass before and was curious so I watched. I got on the internet and looked up everything about the Catholic Church! I was obsessed! I loved reading about the saints and about the Rosary. I didn't have a car at the time, so I didn't go to Mass until I moved to Georgia.
I was not impressed with my first Mass. The Mass was fine, but the people were not. I had never felt so unwelcome in a place. I'd come from a very social church (Southern Baptist) so was taken aback by the silence. I felt as if someone had written "Non-Catholic" across my forehead. I didn't learn until later that most Catholics see Mass, even before and after, as a silent time for worshipping God. But something happened to me at that Mass. I was filled with overwhelming emotion that I couldn't contain. I started crying and couldn't stop. And God spoke. This is the one and only time I can swear that God spoke to me in an audible voice (no loud, booming voice, just in my head). He told me to join His Church. Well, after the way I was treated, I didn't want to be a part of this church! Was He kidding?
The next four years became a tug-of-war game with God. I tried to ignore Him. I went back and forth on whether or not I should become Catholic. Soon after my "conversation" with God, I joined the Navy. While I was in boot camp I was befriended by a Greek Orthodox chaplain. I'd gotten hurt and had to stay longer than normal, eventually having to leave. Because of this chaplain, I almost considered considered joining the Greek Orthodox church. In the end, I decided against it, but I still the this church. I became a huge fan of Iconography because of them.
In 2006 I'd had enough. Religion was making me crazy. So, of course, I changed to ANOTHER religion! I became Wiccan. I sold all of my Christian books to Half Price books and bought books on witchcraft. It lasted two weeks. Remember when I said God wasn't going to let go of me? I lost the tug-of-war game and had mud on my face. I was ashamed. I turned around and sold those books back to HPB and bought a Bible.
At the same time that all of this was happening I was being promoted at work and moving to Irving, TX. I decided to give the Catholic Church one last try. If I wasn't satisfied that was it. No more. I looked for a church in the area and ended up at St. Luke's. I walked in the door and was warmly greeted by the priest, Fr. Aidan O'Donovan. I was in RCIA a week later, converted on Easter Vigil 2007 and haven't looked back since.
I'm not going to say that since my conversion life has been easy. That lazy girl still wells up every once in a while, trying to pull me back down. But now I know that I have God on my side, I have Confession for when I fail, and I have the Eucharist (Communion) to renew my commitment to Christ daily. For those of you considering joining the Catholic Church, I urge you to do your research. My conversion wasn't just a conversion of the heart, but a conversion of the mind. It was an intellectual conversion in a way. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment or email me (my email's on my profile).
Lets face it; almost everyone has a few friends who are crazy about their pets. Whether its a colleague whos nuts about his pooch or a dorm mate who cant live without her kitty, we all know someone whos really into pets, for one reason or another. And when gift giving time comes, theyre also often the victims of boring, inane presents that just dont give justice or show any appreciation for their pet-loving personalities.
Come Christmas or any other special occasion, theyre just swamped with the usual package of dog biscuits, treats, or the occasional grooming product. Now, is this all there is to give for your pet-loving friend or family member? Cmon, people, there are loads of other, more fun and more creative gifts to give! If you really want to give a special present this year, Ive got some great ideas for you.
First Aid kits - Were sticklers for being prepared for any emergency, and a well-stocked first-aid kit is a must in any home. But what about our pets? They, too, deserve some care and preparation in case they get into an accident, right? You can easily find first-aid kits for pets online, stocked with veterinarian-approved products and medications. These kits also come with instruction booklets for proper first-aid procedures.
Scrapbooks - If youve got a friend or family member with a creative eye and a pet lover to boot, then this will be a great gift indeed. Help your pet lover showcase her creativity and affection for her four-legged friend by giving a complete scrapbooking supply kit filled with all the materials she needs to jumpstart her album.
Donations - Making a donation to charitable organizations specializing in animal protection and other related causes should endear you to your pet lover. There are lots of humane societies and organizations, and they are always in need of more funds and supplies to keep their operations running smoothly and effectively.
Obedience Training - Do you know someone who just cannot make his beloved pet sit and stay? Are you lending a constant ear of sympathy to a friend whose pet is forever misbehaving? Do them a favor and give them a full scholarship to obedience school. Dog obedience classes can cost from $100 to $150 for several weekly sessions. You can also get them some private lessons if its preferable.
Collar Bling - The special pet needs a special collar, whether its a cat or a dog. There are several beautiful collars from a variety of materials to accessorize your pet or that of your friend, or you could just pick up some collar charms that come in all sorts of shapes, styles, and sizes that work just fine.
Knit for A Pet - Knitting pattern books can give your needle-wielding friend a plethora of project ideas, from toys, collars, carrying cases and beds, to create some masterpieces that celebrate the affection and bond between human and pet.
A Day at the Spa - Nowadays, pets need to de-stress too. And what better way than to treat them at a relaxing and comfortable day at the spa? There they can be groomed, cleaned, and relaxed to their hearts content. Grooming will cost around $30 to $40, depending on the size and fur length of the pet. They can even enjoy aromatherapy treatments and similar perks at a few luxury establishments.
