Basics of Computed Tomography

Computed Tomography also known as computed axial tomography, or CAT scan, medical technology that uses X rays and computers to produce three-dimensional images of the human body. Unlike traditional X rays, which highlight dense body parts, such as bones, CT provides detailed views of the body's soft tissues, including blood vessels, muscle tissue, and organs, such as the brain. While conventional X rays provide flat two-dimensional images, CT images depict a cross-section of the body.

The CT scanner contains an X-ray source, which emits beams of X rays; an X-ray detector, which monitors the number of X rays that strike various parts of its surface; and a computer. The source and detector face each other on the inside of the scanner ring and are mounted so that they rotate around the rim of the scanner. Beams from the X-ray source pass through the patient and are recorded on the other side by the detector. As the source and detector rotate in a 360 circle around the patient, X-ray emissions are recorded from many angles. The resulting data are sent to the computer, which interprets the information and translates it into images that appear as cross-sections on a television monitor. By moving the patient within the scanner, a series of parallel images, called slices can be obtained. Doctors analyze a series of slices to understand the three-dimensional structure of the body.

To enhance an image, patients may be given an injection of a substance that will increase the contrast between different tissues. The patient may also be asked to drink a liquid that makes intestines more
clearly visible in the CT scan. Contrast agents are commonly used for scans of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. The speed at which CT slices are obtained has increased dramatically since this technology was developed during the late 1960s and early 1970s by British engineer Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield and American physicist Allan MacLeod Cormack. The first CT scanner required 4.5 minutes of scanning and 1.5 minutes of computer reconstruction to generate a single slice. The latest generation of CT scanners create a slice in fraction of a second.

CT was first used to view the tissues of the brain, and this is still its most frequent application. CT of the brain can show if an accident victim has sustained a brain injury, or if bleeding is occurring in the brain of a stroke victim. CT is also commonly used to diagnose disorders involving the chest, abdomen, spine, and pelvis. CT may be used to determine the location and size of a cancerous tumor and whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Newer applications for CT include CT angiography, which provides detailed images of the interior of small blood vessels.

Some experts once expected that CT would be replaced by the newer technology of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which uses magnetically charged protons within the body to create diagnostic images. Nevertheless, CT continues to have several advantages over MRI, including lower cost, wider availability, shorter examination time, superior imaging of the chest and abdomen, and the ability to create images without the strong magnetic field required by MRI. At present, CT and MRI are complementary, rather than competitive technologies.

SPIRAL C.T. (SCT)

Spiral C.T. (SCT) with slip ring technology had a dramatic impact on the approach to C.T. scanning since its introduction, especially at 'speed' of scanning. Spiral C.T. allows 3-D imaging that is useful for vascular imaging imaging of hollow viscera especially the virtual endoscopy has become a reality with SCT. The new hardware and software packages and computer guided Automatic Scanning Technique (C.A.S.T) allows monitoring real time contrast enhancement following administration of I.V. contrast in target organs or vessels (not bolus contrast medium advance), which in turn reduces the amount of C.M. to be used.

Spiral C.T. had a dramatic impact of change of protocols in the form of change in parameters, length of spiral exposure, inter relationship between pitch and collimators, 3-D image displays and above all, proper understanding of I.V. contrast dynamics when compared to C.C.T.. In C.C.T., scans are generally performed with 2 seconds scan time and an interscan delay (ISD) of 6-7 seconds. But in SCT not only the scan but also the ISD for a long length of a segment of the body has been eliminated by volumetric scanning. SCT is expected to replace the CCT eventually by volumetric scanning due to its wide spread clinical applications and acceptance.Such ultrafast scanning has virtually eliminated artifacts occurring as a result of motion. Spatial and contrast resolutions are superior with SCT than CCT.

There are certain limitations of low end SCT. These are limitations of mAs (especially in large patients) in whom scan time have to be increased to 1.5 times. Otherwise with lower mAs, the images are excessively grainy, only higher MHU tubes and refinement of detector technology will decrease these limitations.

IMPORTANCE OF SPIRAL C.T. IN COmputerised Tomography Angiography

The area in which spiral scanning has made the greatest impact is in vascular imaging. CT Angiography is a minimally invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. CT angiography has been shown to be effective in a number of vascular systems including the renal arteries, the aorta and its main branches, the cerebral circulation, the portal venous system, and the pulmonary arteries. Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP) and surface rendering were the 3-D techniques which had been primarily applied to CT angiographic applications. Both of these techniques have important shortcomings which ultimately limit the clinical usefulness of the resulting images. But volume rendering is becoming the preferred 3-D rendering technique for CT angiography.

In CT angiography (CTA), computed tomography using a contrast material produces the detailed pictures. CT imaging uses special x-ray equipment to produce multiple images and a computer to join them together in cross-sectional views. A firm understanding of fundamental principles underlying CT angiography including spiral CT acquisition, image processing, and image display are required in order to get consistently excellent results over a wide range of clinical applications. One of the most compelling advantages of CT angiography is the ability to provide all of the information which previously required two or more radiological studies which may, in the case of conventional angiography, be much more expensive than CT. Image processing techniques such as volume rendering enhance this ability, allowing the radiologist and clinician to interactively explore different aspects of the dataset to address many specific questions which impact patient management.

Asanas are special body positions which can give you qualities either you are lacking or dont have. These poses can balance the nervous, circulatory and endocrine systems. In this respect, they have been known to have healing effects. Originally asanas were used to produce the ability to sit in one position comfortably for a long period of time, aiding in meditation. Today, we can see that they provide flexibility, strength, and balance. In doing so, they can address health problems by promoting the bodys own healing ability.

Lets be clear: TTAC is not in the business of bashing EVs just for the hell of it; there are good reasons why battery-power is the gas foes great white hope. But this story is just too crazy. In BMWs rush to launch its 450-unit MINI E test lease program, it has failed to secure Underwriters Laboratory approval for its high-voltage charging cord. As many as 300 of the 450 customers wholl be getting Mini Es many not get their high-voltage charging cables for a month or so and will have to use sloooooowwwwww 110-volt trickle charging to replenish their cars power pack when the battery runs down, according to Edmunds. Which means instead of taking 4 hours to recharge the MINI Es 150-mile-range batteries, users will have to wait 23 hours to fill up through a 110V cable. At an $850/month lease rate, that makes the MINI E the mother of all EV debacles. Approval for the charger will happen within weeks, say BMW. But as professional EV booster Chelsea Sexton puts it, they are guaranteeing virgin customers a poor experience. And aint that just the way it tends to go for virgins.

San Diegos Top Certified Personal Fitness Trainer Reveals the essential strategies for lasting weight loss and lifelong fitnessby oksanapet16 Tips for getting maximum Weight Loss and Fitness results in minimum time *Do you want to improve the quality of your life? *Do you want to look and feel better than you have in years - maybe better than you ever have before? *Do you want to protect yourself from disease and injury? And do you want to live a longer, more vital life? Im confident that you answered “YES!” to each of those questions, just as have the hundreds of individuals Ive counseled, coached, and trained in my career as a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Health Expert. Right now Im going to reveal to you the 16 essential strategies that have enabled my clients to achieve these important goals. These simple strategies can be immediately implemented into your lifestyle with little sacrifice on your part (okay, if not eating artery clogging fast food burgers and fries is a big thing for you, then maybe you wont look at that sacrifice as but I guarantee you it will add quality years to your life). Why believe me? Because I have been training people for 14 years. Because Ive seen people fail and others succeed. Because Im the only person in San Diego who has 15 years of solid medical training, a NSCA CPT, and I am also a Certified Master Fitness Instructor through the Prestigious Coopers Institute. Because all of my Personal Training Clients are happy and getting good results. I am giving you this information because Im tired of seeing people getting ripped off and wasting their time and energy on the latest diet or device. Im tired of seeing slick marketers make a lot of money by selling people lies that wont help them. So lets get right into it. Read on to discover 1. How to Stay Motivated. One of the biggest problems most people have is that they work out great for a couple of weeks, then just fade away. The people who stick with it are those who have these two things in common: * They dont follow a set routine. Routines always become boring. They also set you up for repetitive stress injuries. They dont work either. Your body quickly adapts to any routine and doesnt need to change any more to keep up. * They get on an effective exercise program, so they get good results. The people who lose their motivation are the people who get frustrated because they are not getting good results. When you are getting good results, you will be so pumped that its actually hard to quit. A good fitness instructor will help you with both of these items. 2. Dont make it so hard. Most people think of exercise as torture. They imagine that you must sweat and groan for hours every day to get in good shape. Not so, my friend! Two days per week of 30-minute low-intensity cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, biking, swimming); and two days per week of 30-minute light resistance training (using weights or resistance machines) is adequate in the beginning. As you become acclimated to the lifestyle shift, you can add more days and get improved results. But beware: if you try to do too much too fast, you may end up quitting altogether. If youve tried and failed doing it alone, then I suggest you get a training partner or personal trainer who will help you sustain your motivation. 3. Your exercise program needs only three things. If you skip any one of these three, your results will suffer. * Resistance Exercise. This will raise your metabolism and cause you to burn more calories all day, even when you are asleep at night. * Cardiovascular Exercise. Your heart rate during cardio exercise should be 60% to 80% of your maximum heart rate. The simple formula for calculating your 100% maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. If the intensity of your exercise increases your heart rate beyond 80%, slow it down a bit. If your heart rate isnt at least 60%, quit loafing. Your personal trainer can supply you with a simple heart rate monitor you can wear during exercise so you always stay in your peak fat-burning range. * Proper Nutrition. A good, hard workout can burn maybe 300-500 calories in 30-45 minutes. It only takes one Big Mac to flush your entire workout down the toilet. 4. Dont waste your time working small muscles with isolated movements. If you dont enjoy doing resistance training or are pressed for time, concentrate on working the largest muscle groups with compound resistance movements. When I see overweight people doing wrist curls or lateral raises, I wonder why. Its generally just a lack of understanding of how their bodies work. Most people want to lose fat and tone and firm their bodies. The way to do that is to use resistance (weights or machines) to train the large muscle groups. Men should be concentrating on legs, chest and back. Women should concentrate more on their legs and back. The best exercises for legs are lunges or squats (your personal trainer will show you the proper form and then monitor you during the exercise) and leg press. The best chest exercise is bench press, and the best back exercise is the seated row. All of these are compound movements, which means they incorporate multiple muscle groups. 5. Always, always, always stretch.Stretching improves flexibility, blood flow, muscle recovery, low back pain and a host of other things. Additionally, stretching can prevent injury, make you sleep better and improve your performance in all sports. Always stretch, but be certain not to stretch cold muscles. You should always warm up before stretching. However, it is very important that you know how to stretch. Never bounce! Your personal trainer will show you the proper execution and timing of your stretches. 6. Dont do traditional sit-ups. Unless you are super athlete with an incredibly well-developed midsection, sit-ups can lead to a strained lower back and possibly lumbar injuries. But it gets worse. Rather than hitting your abdominal section, sit-ups can shift exercise tension to your hip flexors - which defeats the purpose. There is so much misinformation about how to strengthen, tone, and firm the midsection, its almost frightening. It is very difficult to learn proper abdominal exercise technique by reading about it or watching it demonstrated on a video. You need to do it with supervision and get feedback about your form from a knowledgeable source. And keep in mind that you use your abdominal muscles in almost every single movement you make. Strengthening your abdominal region is the single most effective way to prevent, or recover from, low back pain. 7. Set realistic, attainable goals. You must have tangible, quantifiable, short-term, and long-term goals for your fitness program so you can gauge your progress. Its crucial to have a before you begin, so you can measure success. Your personal trainer can give you a complete fitness analysis (you need this!) that will aid you and your trainer in developing a personalized fitness program, which addresses your particular needs. Having goals, particularly short-term goals, allows you to track your progress and keep motivated when times are tough and you dont feel like exercising. Keeping a journal of your cardio and resistance training workouts, as well as tracking what you eat is truly a fitness success secret. Just remember that your goals should be realistic and attainable. The best way for you to understand what is realistic and attainable for you is to talk to a fitness professional - not to buy into the of infomercials, diet and fitness products that blatantly mislead. 8. Set exercise appointments with yourself.Use your day-timer to set appointments for exercise - and then stick to them. You wouldnt miss a business meeting or client appointment, would you? So dont miss your exercise appointment with yourself. Nothing is more important than your health. Nothing. Everything else will crumble around you if your health goes south. So make your exercise appointments a priority. If you find it difficult to keep these appointments, then consider hiring a personal trainer who will hold you to your commitment. When you have money invested, and someone waiting for you to show up - you are much more likely to actually show up! 9. Remember the benefits of exercise.Remember that feeling of euphoria you experienced after a particularly good work-out? You experienced that feeling because the most powerful feel good drug in the world - endorphins - were coursing through your veins. If there is a panacea, its exercise. Nothing feels better than the post-work-out high you experience after exercising. Revel in that feeling. Let it wash over you and truly experience it. Etch that feeling in your brain. It will fuel your motivation on those inevitable days when you just dont feel like exercising. Being physically fit affects every single aspect of your life: you sleep better, eat better, love better, overcome stress better, work better, communicate better, and live better! 10. Exercise correctly. So much time is wasted doing, at best, unproductive exercise, or at worst, dangerous exercise. Get educated on how to exercise correctly. And the absolute best way to do that is to hire a personal trainer to develop a program for you and then teach you what to do and how to do it right. Personal training does not have to be an ongoing process. You can hire a personal trainer for whatever length of time you need to learn the ropes. It could be five sessions, or it could be fifteen sessions. Its completely up to you. But statistics prove that those who understand how to exercise correctly, get better, faster results. And thats what you want, right? Results! 11. Enjoy yourself. The most difficult thing is actually getting into your running shoes or going to the gym. But once you begin your work-out, relax and enjoy the process. Dont fight it. Make exercise your personal time. When you are exercising you can focus completely on yourself. Yes, exercising can and should be somewhat rigorous (depending on your level of fitness), but it is just that investment which makes it supremely rewarding. As with anything, if you are in the moment, you can fully appreciate the experience and truly enjoy the process. 12. Americans eat too many carbohydrates for our lifestyles.Im not advocating the high protein, high saturated fat diet that you hear so much about (frankly, its dangerous). But I am advocating minimizing your intake of bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and, of course, all sugary drinks. We are no longer an agrarian society participating in manual labor. Most of us are fairly sedentary throughout the day and therefore do not need the high levels of carbohydrates to sustain our energy. Additionally, carbohydrates are addictive. The more donuts you eat, the more you want. The bulk of your carbohydrates should come from vegetables and fruit. And those with high water content, such as cucumbers, grapefruit, tomatoes, cantaloupe, strawberries and even vegetable soups (watch out for high sodium), will fill you up nicely. By the way, numerous studies have conclusively proven that the quarter of the population eating the most vegetables get half the cancer of the quarter eating the least! 13. Deep-fried food has no nutritional value - none!Almost every food, whether its steak, chocolate or red wine, has some nutrients to contribute. But one thing is absolute: fried foods are garbage. Potato chips, French fries, onion rings, breaded chicken strips and all the rest of the deep-fried junk are pregnant with saturated fat and calories, and they contain almost zero nutritional value. If youre trying to lose weight and/or reduce fat, simply eliminate fried foods completely from your diet. Yikes! That stuff is scary. 14. Never, ever skip breakfast. If you want to maximize your fitness results or fat-loss efforts, youve got to eat breakfast. Even if you dont exercise at all - breakfast remains the most important meal of the day. Your breakfast should contain complete proteins and complex carbohydrates (if youre trying to lose weight, you should eat the bulk of your complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch and only have vegetable carbohydrates at dinner). A great breakfast is oatmeal (not the pre-packaged, pre-sweetened kind) with a little honey and banana and a protein drink. Or try scrambled egg whites with Healthy Choice turkey sausage. 15. Drink plenty of fresh, clean water.Yes, I know that youve heard this over and over again. But theres a reason for that - its the gospel truth! The recommended amount is approximately eight glasses, or 64 ounces, of water every day. When you are exercising, you need to drink even more. Over 75% of your body is water (even bone is more than 20% water). When you dont drink enough water, and substitute diuretics like coffee, tea and caffeinated sodas, you dehydrate your body, your blood doesnt flow properly, and your digestive system doesnt operate smoothly (among other problems). Even a small deficit of water can radically affect how your body performs. Heres a good rule of thumb: if youre urine is a dark yellow and/or has a strong odor, youre not drinking enough water. Drink up! 16. Eat regularly throughout the day.Fasting or overly restrictive diets will enable you to lose weight - in the short run, because the weight you lose is primarily water weight and lean muscle mass. In the long run, it has exactly the opposite effect you want. When you restrict your diet, your body instinctively thinks its being starved and shifts into a protective mode by storing fat. Energy expenditures are fueled by your lean muscles. Therefore your body fat remains essentially the same and you lose vital fluids and muscle instead. The less muscle you have, the slower your metabolism becomes, and the less fat you burn. Instead of eating three big meals (or worse yet, one HUGE meal) eat five or six nutritionally balanced each day. This keeps your metabolic furnace stoked, so you burn more at a faster rate. I know, its counter-intuitive, but its true! There you have it. 16 essential strategies for an effective weight loss and fitness program that will have you looking and feeling better than you have in years - maybe ever! I realize that starting (or re-starting) a productive and effective health and fitness program is not easy. Thats why I encourage you to get help. If youre sick, you go to the doctor. If youve got a tax problem, you see an accountant (or an attorney!). Have a toothache? Youre off to the dentist. So why is it that so many people attempt to solve their health and fitness problems without consulting an expert? I dont know exactly, but I encourage you to make the investment in yourself - in your quality of life - by hiring a certified personal fitness trainer to educate you and help you get started (because the hardest part is just getting started and sustaining your motivation until fitness becomes habitual). Once you develop the habit, which can take as little as thirty days, your whole life will change for the better. If I can be of any assistance to you, please dont hesitate to call me. Im happy to speak with you and give you my recommendations without any sales pressure (I it when people try to me, so I wouldnt try that on you). Please E-mail me to obtain any additional information you may need. Thank you. Best in Health,Rivak E. Hoffmanhttp://www.somagenesis.

One of the most important jobs a parent has is to teach their children healthful habits. I used to shop for my families meals on autopilot. I rarely looked at the labels and bought what my kids liked rather than what was good for them. I am so grateful to have learned so many helpful ideas that have truly made a difference in how I feed my family. I hope these tips will be useful for you too!

Tip #1: Try and stick to the perimeter of the grocery store. That is where the fresh foods are like dairy, meats and produce.

Tip #2: Read food labels! Sometimes the front of the box is misleading. Look at the ingredients and notice the first one listed. That is what the product is mostly made up of. The shorter the list of ingredients the less processed it will be.

Tip #3: Avoid products with harmful ingredients like high fructose corn syrup and partially/fully hydrogenated oils. These fats are also known as trans fats and are in MANY foods like cereals, cookies, crackers, chips, pastries, donuts, peanut butter, coffee creamers, breads, soups, cereal bars, margarine, salad dressings etc.

Tip #4: When shopping for cereal or cookies be aware that the sugar grams per serving do not exceed 8 grams. (You can figure how many teaspoons are in a product by taking the # of grams of sugar listed and divide that # by 4. ie. 20 grams of sugar is equal to 5 tsp.'s)

Tip #5: Buy generic when you can. I have found several Greenwise Publix brand cereals that my kids love and are significantly less expensive than other known brands. The Greenwise ketchup is also delicious and has no high fructose corn syrup! The Publix all natural peanut butter is also healthy and less expensive than leading brands.

Tip # 6: Avoid artificial sweeteners (Aspartame, Nutrasweet, Splenda ect.) They are all synthetic forms of sugar and the human body does not recognize it as a food! Try Stevia or Sucanot. Both are available at Publix.

Tip # 7: Eat foods that have fiber. The recommended fiber intake is 25-35 grams per day. You can get fiber in RAW foods, whole grain breads (Ezekiel sprouted bread) nuts, seeds and beans.

Tip #8: Buy foods that are high in omega-3 fats like flaxseed, tuna, cod, salmon, halibut, pumpkin seeds, walnuts and soybeans.

Tip # 9: Limit kids to no more than 4 ounces of juice per day. The amount of sugar, artificial colors, flavors and dyes is shocking when you really read the labels! Encourage water whenever possible and remember you need about half of your body weight in ounces per day or at least 64 oz. for adults.

Tip # 10: When planning family meals try and include a variety of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. These powerful foods are loaded with antioxidants that help protect the immune system and in study after study are also proving to help protect you from many cancers, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

To get the most out of a fitness program and reach your goals sooner, you should know that keeping up with your heart rate is vital. Yet, you can take it to another level. Instead of just monitoring what your heart rate is during a workout, you can use these numbers continually throughout your workout and do heart rate training. Heart rate training is when you keep up with your heart rate so you can take your body into different heart rate zones during your workout. Heart rate training is becoming the preferred method of exercise for many people because exercise goals are met sooner and more efficiently.
To begin heart rate training you must first find out your maximum heart rate. After you learn your maximum heart rate, you will take that number and base all of the heart rate zones around it. But, before you find out what your maximum heart rate is and do the calculations, you should judge what fitness level you are at:
Poor Shape: You have been sedentary and you havent exercised in the past eight weeks or longer. Fair Shape: You are fairly active and walk more than a mile, or do some type of aerobic activity, at least three times a week. Good Shape: You exercise almost daily and/or you run five or more miles weekly.
Do the following test to help you see what range your maximum heart rate will be in.
Walk One Mile: Walk a mile at an even pace either on a treadmill or at a track. When you are nearing the end of your mile, or in the last quarter of your mile, take your heart rate. Add 40 to this number if you listed yourself in poor shape; add 50 to this number if you listed yourself in fair shape, and add 60 to this number if you listed yourself in good shape.
Now that you have determined your maximum heart rate, or maximum heart rate zone, you can start heart rate training. The most efficient and easiest way to monitor your heart rate during a workout is to use a treadmill, or other equipment, that is equipped with a heart rate control monitor. It will be your guide to let you know which heart rate zone you are in while you are working out. Using them will take the guess work out of your heart rate and let you know exactly where your heart rate is at any given moment. Machines, like treadmills, that come with heart rate control monitors act as your personal trainers and the numbers tell you whether you should maintain your pace, slow down a bit, or step it up a notch depending on your current heart rate zone.
Your Individual Heart Rate Training Zones
A heart rate training routine should last between 20-30 minutes, and you should cycle in and out of the different heart rate zones throughout the workout.
Healthy Heart Zone: Exercise is comfortable and you are able to carry on a conversation while you are in this zone. Your heart rate is 50%-60% of your maximum heart rate.
Fitness Zone: You find it is getting a little harder to talk and you are breathing heavier. You heart rate is at 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate.
Aerobic Zone: In this zone your heart rate is 70%-80% of your maximum heart rate and you should only be able to speak in phrases.
Anaerobic Zone: In this zone your heart rate is 80%-90% of your maximum heart rate and you should only be able to gasp out a word here and there because you will be breathing heavily.
Red Line Zone: You will only be able to stay within this zone for a few minutes, and you probably wont be able to speak at all. If you do, it will be a gasped word or two that may be hard to understand. Your heart rate is on target for your maximum heart rate goal.
If you are looking for a workout routine that will help you lose weight, or reach your exercise goals sooner, consider heart rate training. To make your workout as efficient as possible, workout on a treadmill or other exercise machine, that has a heart rate monitor. Dont waste your time trying to judge and calculate your heart rate yourself. Let the machines do the monitoring so you can focus your time on your heart rate zones.

One Womans Eye: Greatest Results

  • Apr. 29th, 2009 at 8:29 AM

It's official. I am now on Twitter. I don't quite know what to do with it yet but it got me thinking about all the things there are to read now. Between my ever growing list of blogs, newsletter updates, Facebook, Linkedin, The New York Times(I confess. I like that best when I can feel the newsprint on my hands) and now, Twitter, there is alot to distract me.

Of course, I am a reader. I always have been. I am one of those people who believes information is power and the best way to get that is by reading. If you can read, you can do anything.

So I like having lots to read.

But what about that old concept of reading with no purpose and no interaction. Just reading for the sake of reading. I think that was the idea behind silent reading when you were in a kid in school.

Remember that designated time of the day when everyone shut everything off and just read for twenty minutes. Not for work or for necessity, or to respond to an email or a blog, but just for fun. Everyone. Students, teachers, the principals secretary.

Twenty minutes of uninterrupted silence.

I wonder what would happen if we worked silent reading into the economic stimulus plan. What if for even fifteen minutes every day, the country just paused and got quiet with something to read that was not an email, text message or twitter and required no outside interaction. What if we all just sat with our favorite section of the paper, or that article in the magazine you get every month but barely have time to scan, or heres a stretch, the novel that you just have not been able to get to. Just sat and read and learned something. No multi-tasking allowed.

The only sound would be that of pages turning.

I always heard a lot in the quiet of that silent reading time. Ideas being hatched. Dreams created. Possibilities being sketched out. A new perspective opened. It was that great pause that refreshes, except no one was drinking a Coca Cola.

I wonder what would happen if that was written that into the plan. How much good might be created.

We've had unseasonably warm temperatures in the New York City area this weekend. Race organizers of today's More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Full and Half Marathon in New York's Central Park were so concerned about the predicted temperatures in the 80s that they cancelled the full marathon and called the half-marathon a "fun run," an un-scored, untimed, non-competitive race. Race organizers hoped that a "fun run" atmosphere would discourage runners from racing against the clock or each other. I ran the half-marathon, along with thousands of other women, and found the weather conditions to be pretty uncomfortable. Yet I couldn't help but wonder if the full marathoners, if given the choice, would have still opted to run the 26.2 miles. Did they want to decide for themselves whether the conditions were unsafe? What about the women who trained in Florida or another warm area, and were acclimated to running in that type of weather? After all that training, should they at least have been given the chance to see how they felt, and then drop out if it didn't go well? Race organizers are undoubtedly worried about runners suffering from heat-related illnesses, which can lead to -- in extreme cases -- death. They worry that runners may not know the signs of heat-related illnesses and push themselves too hard. What do you think? Should race organizers cancel races because of extreme weather (high heat, humidity, heavy snow, thunderstorms, etc.) Or should they allow runners to decide for themselves if they should start and finish the race? Take the poll and share your comments below.

EurekAlert: In 1994, University of Utah mathematician Ken Golden went to the Eastern Weddell Sea for the Antarctic Zone Flux Experiment. The sea's surface is normally covered with sea ice, the complex composite material that results when sea water is frozen. During a powerful winter storm, Golden observed liquid sea water welling up and flooding the sea ice surface, producing a slushy mixture of sea water and snow that freezes into snow-ice. With his mathematician's eyes he observed this phenomenon and said to himself: "That's percolation!"

Golden is an expert in mathematical models of percolation, a physical process in which a fluid moves and filters through a porous solid. Soon after the 1994 trip he started trying to understand how the mathematics of percolation could describe aspects of the formation and behavior of sea ice. His results appeared in a landmark paper in Science in 1998, written with co-authors S. F. Ackley and V. I. Lytle. Ever since then, Golden has been a leader in the international effort to model polar climate dynamics and has brought a new level of rigor and precision to this area of research.

.Golden discovered that, as a percolation phenomenon, sea ice has similarities to compressed powders used in the development of stealthy (or radar-absorbing) composites. He was able to build on existing models developed for these powders to create a percolation-based model for sea ice. His model captured one of the key features of sea ice: When the volume of brine is under about 5 percent, the sea ice is impermeable to fluid flow. But when the brine volume passes that critical 5-percent threshold, the sea ice suddenly becomes permeable to fluid flow. This 5-percent threshold corresponds to a critical temperature of -5 degrees Celsius for a typical bulk salinity of 5 parts per thousand. At first Golden did not quite realize what a breakthrough this work represented. "It was just a cool observation, with the comparison to stealthy materials," he remarked. "I didn't realize how important it was at the time." But today, polar scientists routinely refer to the "rule of fives" that emerged from Golden's work.

One of the reasons the work was so important, Golden explained, is that the permeability of sea ice is at the heart of a range mechanisms that control the dynamics of polar climate: the formation of snow-ice, the evolution of surface melt ponds that determine how much solar radiation sea ice reflects or absorbs, gas and thermal exchange processes, and more. The permeability also controls nutrient replenishment and other processes critical to the biology of algal and bacterial communities living in the brine inclusions of sea ice, which support the rich food webs of the polar oceans. "You name it, and permeability and percolation play a key role," he said. "But before our work there was no theoretical basis to support this understanding.

Are you having difficulty choosing a diet or weight loss program? Trust me, I know exactly how you feel!

5 years ago (almost 6 years in a couple of months...woohoo!) when I started my weight loss journey, I was looking around trying to choose an effective weight loss program to help me get started on my quest for weight loss and muscle gain. That was a headache! I kept coming across a lot of those "celebrity diets", "fad diets", "no carb", "no protein", blah, blah, blah!

After many years of researching, here's what I've learned...

First of all, diets and weight loss programs are NOT LONG TERM SOLUTIONS. Diets and weight loss programs should be used to get you started, lose those first pounds, and get you educated on living a healthy lifestyle. Living a healthy lifestyle and staying consistent with it, is what will get you in great shape and health....for life. Use a diet program just to get the ball rolling.

Use the following question checklist to help you choose a diet or weight loss program for you...

1. What is the primary aspect of this weight loss product?
Is it fat loss, proper nutrition, building muscle, etc.? If it does not focus on the core principles of a healthy lifestyle (such as "don't have protein", "eat fiber only", "eat what you want and just drink this magical formula to drop pounds", etc.)....AVOID!

2. Testimonials?
Never, I repeat, NEVER buy into a diet or weight loss program without seeing testimonials first!

3. Valuable content or system?
What's included? There should be a bullet list of everything that's included. Is it good value...or is it information that you can already find on your own....or worse....you already know?!

4. Any extra value?
Is there anything else contained with this diet that is of more value than others? This could be one on one support, diet tools, etc.

5. Any bonuses?
Most diet and weight loss programs are good enough to not need bonuses for someone to make a decision. I'm not saying that you should solely base your decision on if a program has bonuses or not. I'm saying that you should base it on the above points and use bonuses as a minimal add on to your decision making. Some programs have some VERY GOOD bonuses....BUT the program or diet is not effective. That's why you should approach bonuses as a minimal part of your decision making process....base it primarily on if this diet or weight loss program is going to be effective.

6. Pricing?
This is the most looked at part of choosing a diet or weight loss program....and it shouldn't be. Some of the best weight loss programs are pretty expensive....probably why they are the best? However, you should still choose wisely. You have to look at the above factors and then determine if the price is reasonable. Some diet and weight loss programs are e-books, manuals, monthly programs, food programs, etc. That is also something else you have to take into consideration when determining if the program is of a fair price.

Chapter five
The black and white ligers were lounging over a pile of rocks in a sunlit clearing. Three were sleeping while one sat, drowsily staring out at them through the trees. It blinked and gave a large teeth-baring yawn before slumping back on the rock.
Tia made a slow back back hand signal and they started to step backwards. The sleepy liger sat up and watched them, like a house cat would watch a tin of tuna being opened. It gave a low growl and sniffed the air.
Tia signalled t stop as the liger stood up, stretched and jumped down from the rock. Another liger looked around and then lay down to sleep.
Back across the gap if it attacks, signed Max. They stepped back, the drop into the chasm behind them. They halted as the liger sniffed again and looked directly at them. With great deliberation, the liger lifted one giant paw and started licking it.
signed Po as the liger wiped the paw over its ears. Max pointed to the wrecked bridge and tree where Toran had crossed. They crept down, again with a huge drop on one side and the jungle on the other.
Gotta remember to check the scanner. Way too close, said Tia once they reached the tree. She checked it now and saw the ligers were still sitting in their clearing. The beetles were now three hundred metres away and there were no more large heat spots between them and the beach.
We got to get those beetles back before he gets on The Gourmet. I doubt hes going to fall for the voice replicator again, said Max, leading the way.
They scrambled over fallen trees and dodged vines. But Toran was moving fast, too. As they slid under a huge blue moss-covered tree leaning across the path, Po ooked and pointed across to a clearing in the sun. It was the exploding yellow berry grove that had put the ligers on their tail.
Yeah, we want to avoid, said Max, climbing over another log.
Tarook! Kabooomook! said Po.
Tia stopped and grinned. Maxa-millionaire has a plan!, she said. She pulled her light jacket off and crept up to the bushes. Po and Max carefully approached as Tia picked the translucent berries from the bush and placed them in her jacket.
Pick some over there, she instructed. Max and Po sidled up to the bushes and started filling Maxs jacket with berries. Each time Max plucked a berry he clenched his eyes closed.
How is this a plan exactly? he said.
A shiver went through the bush as he spoke and he and Po held their breaths. The ripple quivered up and down before the bush settled.
ll splat the berries on them and the ligers will come, whispered Tia.
said Max.
The bush Po and Max were picking from started quivering and so did the one next to it. They backed up a few paces and hid behind a tree. Tia shook her head and plucked a final berry. She folded her jacket over the berries and walked over to them.
You need to learn to keep your voice down around exploding berries, said Tia with a smile.
Sounds good but said Max, looking behind her. Tia turned around to see the bush theyd been picking from was now shaking, as were the ones near it. Tia raised her eyebrows and managed to communicate move now! They made it a few metres away before there was a splattering as the berries exploded. A cloud of yellow plumed up and was greeted with low yowl from the ligers direction.
Always with the chasing, said Tia. They ran through the jungle, Tia and Max holding their cargo of exploding yellow berries as still as they could.
ll splat them, ligers will chase them and theyll drop the beetles, panted Tia as they ran.
Close, theyre close, said Max, looking at his watch and ducking under a branch at the same time. Po shouted a warning and Max turned as one of Torans goons tackled him. They hit the ground together, rolling. Max managed to bounce up without his exploding berries hitting the ground.
Watch out! said Tia as the goon jumped up and leapt for Max as he threw a handful of berries. The splattering explosion knocked the goon back onto the ground, covering his face and neck with yellow goop.
Behind you, said Max and flung another handful of berries as Tia and Po dived to the ground. Hench and the other goon ducked so only a few berries hit their target.
You kids, um, children, need to give up, not follow us, said Hench as he stood up.
Toran and Foe appeared behind them, holding the boxes of beetles. re already dead so give it up, said Toran, shaking a box. Inside it the beetles bounced up and down without a sound. They were still, with their legs curled up, lifeless.
re NOT taking them! said Tia and Max together, flinging berries at the group. The berries hit in an explosion of yellow goop. Toran stumbled as bits of broken berries splattered into his eyes. He dropped the box, the lid snapping off and beetles scattering across the ground. A tremendous roar erupted nearby.
Giant, um, big, very big cats, Dr Toran sir, said Hench.
Get the beetles, said Tia and threw another handful of berries at Toran and his goons. They hit in another explosion of yellow, Max and Po leaping forward and grabbing two boxes from them. Foe dropped his box which cracked open on a log, beetles spilling across the ground.
To The Gourmet, said Toran, wiping his eyes clean as the ligers approached.
Tia, Max and Po bolted away down the hill toward the beach. Behind them the ligers roared again and they heard the crashing of branches and Toran shouting.
Had enough running for today, gasped Max as ran. They burst from the jungle, stumbling out onto the clean white sand. Po tripped and dropping his box of beetles. The lid snapped off and the most disgusting odour bullied its way into their noses.
Urgh, old nappy mixed with dead snails and garbage bin juice, gasped Tia, holding her nose closed. She tipped the box over, scattering beetles on the sand and saw a tiny piece of Bollivergers Old wedged into the bottom corner of the box. Once the box was empty of beetles, Tia flung it away.
re not dead, said Max as beetles started to twitch. Soon they were all moving around, making blurting sounds of inquiry.
Tablllurpt, gapllurt ziblllurrtttp, blurted Po to them, and pointed to the mountain peak.
Tia pulled the lid off Maxs box, blocking her nose against the cheese stench. She tipped the beetles out and flung the tub away. Soon the beetles were milling around and blurting to each other. They gave a final bllurrrpprt to Po and streamed up the beach and into the jungle.
said Po, waving to them.
ll come back and clear concrete once we deal with Toran, said Tia. They jogged along the beach until they found Traveller where theyd left it. As they were pushing it into the water, all three communicators activated.
Hurry, were under attack! said Cornelius.
They leapt into the boat and Max turned the electric motor up to full speed. Traveller cut through the water and in moments The Betserai came into view. As did The Gourmet and the catapult on its deck.
There they are, said Tia, pointing at the black boat cruising up behind The Gourmet.
They met The Betserai a minute later, automated clamps swinging down to grasp Traveller at each end. There was the whir of an electric motor and they zipped up to the deck, leaping out and landing with a crunch underfoot.
said Max, lifting his foot, fine white grains falling.
s SUGAR! said Cornelius from the onboard speakers. re firing again, get under cover!
A hiss of pressurised air from The Gourmet and the catapult swung its mighty arm and flung four giant bags across to burst on The Betserais deck. They managed to duck behind Traveller as white sugar covered everything.
Why are they throwing sugar at us? asked Max, as they stood up to see Toran appear on the deck, a yellow-splattered black-coated scarecrow.
s lucky were not evil and carrying gunpowder so he has a severe allergic reaction, said Tia, clenching her teeth as she spoke. Part of Torans file advised he was extremely allergic to gunpowder due to a snake bite hed received years earlier. It was a lucky break stopping him being as absolutely evil and dangerous as he could be.
Give me the beetles and Ill let you go after I sink The Betsy Crybaby. You can go back to the island. Send the beetles now or youll get to meet some friends of mine, said Toran, his voice echoing from a giant loudspeaker. He lifted a container and held it up.
Max took a photo for Cornelius. Inside the box was a mass of squirming multicoloured slugs.
Slugs? What is he going to do with slugs? said Tia.
Toran spoke over the speaker again. This, you stupid children controlled by an agoraphobic fool, is the Sugar Slug of the Honeysuckle Peninsula. Lets learn a few things about the sugar slug. First of all, it - spoke from the speakers at a low volume so only they could hear it. Load the Bollivergers Old into the dye cannon and hit their deck, he said. Those sugar slugs eat anything covered in sugar - including metal, wood and everything this boat is made of. Theyre voracious and if he lands it here, youll be sinking. Go now!
Po ran inside and Tia and Max moved over to the dye cannon as Toran droned on about how the sugar slug would reduce The BetsyPooPants to a floating mess if they didnt give the beetles to him. They opened the cannon covering and removed the shell inside. It was filled with a brilliant green liquid that (as Cornelius had explained almost every time theyd used it) would permanently mark any ship used by poachers. The liquid was also filled with microscopic radio emitters and fragments containing encrypted code numbers. Each capsule is unique, said Max and Tia, mimicking what Cornelius said. Po appeared on deck carrying a triple sealed tube of Bollivergers Old. Even though the wood, plastic and steel they could smell the faint aroma of rotting meat, garbage tip mud and prawn shells left wrapped up in a plastic bag for weeks. Po unscrewed the steel end and pulled out the plastic shell. The stench intensified, Tia and Max covering their noses. Po unscrewed the plastic end and slid out the wood cylinder, the final case around the cheese.
I think Im going to puke, said Max, turning green under his red dye and clutching the cannon.
GIVE ME THE BEETLES RIGHT NOW OR I FIRE! said Toran over the loudspeaker.
Po shoved the cylinder into the cannon and closed the cover, falling back and covering his nose. Holding her hand across her face, Tia hit the AUTOAIM button and got ready to hit FIRE. Electric motors whirred and the cannon moved about at it sought to lock on to a target. It was programmed with a basic intelligence so it could recognise ships and hit them with pinpoint accuracy. The cannon moved about and then settled down, NO TARGET displayed on the screen.
Stupid shielding! Cover nose for me!
Tia hit the manual targeting button and grabbed the two large handles on the cannons sides as Max clamped her nose shut for her. A crosshair popped up with a click.
I really really really dont feel so good, groaned Max as the wafts of Bollivergers leaked from the cannon.
said Po through his own blocked nose.
And Im sorry your nose is better than mine, I am, said Max, his eyes closed and his face now a white sheet around the edges.
Over on The Gourmet, Toran was shouting and pointing at The Betserai. Tia saw Hench scurrying for the catapult, the container of sugar slugs in hand, as she lined up the deck.
s go puke cheese, she said and hit the FIRE button. There was a burst of pressurised air and the cylinder shot from the cannon, flying in a perfect arc to explode on The Gourmets deck. Toran yelled and covered his nose as the crew dropped unconscious, Hench spilling over and falling on to the catapult with the container of sugar slugs under him.
The fire sprinklers on The Betserai switched on and cold water doused the deck, washing away the sugar.
That was the button I was looking for, said Cornelius over the speaker.
Max and Po flopped back on the deck as the water washed away the sugar and the Bollivergers smell dissipated. One disgusting cheese, said Max, his face returning to its normal colour (which at the moment was still bright red).
said Tia, holding out her hand. Max handed his binoculars to her. On The Gourmet, Toran was shouting at an unconscious Hench.
Oh no, looks like someones entire crew is out of it. And whats this? He broke open the sugar slug container as he fell. I believe he did, she commentated as Toran lifted Hench and dropped him before bolting inside the ship. There was a hole in The Gourmets deck. The sugar slugs had eaten their way through the catapult, the wooden deck and down below.
Toran! Youll never guess who are on their way, said Cornelius through the speakers. Seems youve been cutting down some very rare trees in South America. Some men from the navy would like to have a word with you!
The outside screen changed to a map display. Shown was The Betserai, a circle where Cornelius had drawn The Gourmet and ten kilometres away an approaching fleet of navy vessels.
Not over, said Toran through the speakers and then The Gourmet lurched forward in the water, a huge plume of black smoke bursting out the back of it. As The Gourmet shot away from them at high speed, heading for the open sea, Toran appeared on deck and threw something overboard into the water.
Should we follow? said Max, trying to see what Toran had dumped.
The Betserais engines started and they drifted backwards. Get inside right now! called Cornelius. He dropped the sugar slugs and theyre coming right for us!
They ducked inside, Max slamming the door closed as the sprinklers outside switched up to high pressure mode. A flood of hot water sprayed over the ship, washing the last grains of sugar into the water. The sugar slugs swam through the water like serpents, twisting their bodies to propel themselves through the water. They circled in the pool of sugary water for a moment before spiralling toward them again.
ve got an disgusting idea, said Tia, pushing past Max and Po to go downstairs. And it involves cheese again. They rushed downstairs to the bait stores where they kept all manner of foods to lure the most reluctant animals. The safe for the Bollivergers Old was open and a filthy handkerchief scent hit them. Gotta remember to close the safe Po man, said Tia and pulled out the final canister of Bollivergers. Po gave an ook that roughly translated as ll remember to do that the next time were being bombarded with a sugar catapult and are about to be eaten by slugs.re not going to do what I think youre going to do. Because we have to live on this ship and that smell wont come out for weeks, said Max as Tia led the way to the machinery room.
I am and if we dont want the sugar slugs to sink us then this is the plan, she said, opening the cheeses steel layer. They reached the water store that fed the onboard sprinklers and Max unscrewed the access panel. Over the water filter roaring as it sucked in seawater, purified it and then pumped it up to deck sprinklers, he said something about sailing on a stinkboat for the rest of eternity.
Tia pulled off the plastic covering and got ready to remove the wood. Po held her nose closed and Max held the access panel, ready to clamp it back in place. Tia wrenched off the containers end and held it upside down over the hole in the tank. The stench filled the room in an instant as the cylinder of cheese slid out with a revolting squelching sound. As soon as it hit the water, Tia pulled her hands back and Max sealed it in. Tia dropped the wooden cylinder on the ground and they rushed from the room, slamming the door behind them.
A screen at the corridors end lit up and Cornelius appeared. Great thinking! he said and split the screen to show the sugar slugs swimming in circles as though they were dazed. He split the screen again and showed the putrid cheese infused water pouring over The Betserai. As a revolting smell began to leak down and they all covered their noses, Cornelius was clapping and chanting success success SUCCESS!
*
Three hours later they were resting on the beach of Baloogo Loogo while Cornelius pressure-cleaned the entire ship. The navy had come and gone, first of all sailing up and quickly backing away to a distance as the ships smell hit them. Via radio they explained to Cornelius the rare trees Toran had cut down in South America contained an extract with amazing properties: anything it was painted on because invisible to electronic devices.
ll have to use your eyes and good old fashion gumption! Cornelius had told them as they sailed away from the island, searching for The Gourmet.
Tia checked her watch, making sure the ligers were nowhere near them. Back on the sunny rock, she said.
Cornelius had managed to scoop up the sugar slugs from the water and seal them in a sugar free container. Hed nudged The Betserai close to them until they passed out from the smell. They were sleeping curled up together in a container next to Max.
Po put his feet up on the stack of sugar bags and gave a contented s the plan, Po my man, said Max, looking down at the container of sleeping slugs. We sugar up the concrete, these little guys get to work and soon the blurting beetles will have their habitat back. Then we take the sugar slugs back to their home if Toran hasnt destroyed it.I think those are the beetles, said Tia, showing them the screen of her watch. Past where theyd hit Toran with the exploding fruit a mass of red was moving towards the mountain top. Further up, the band of red goop was still simmering away at sixty degrees Celsius. Those little guys can handle it after living in boiling mud, said Tia.
You know, I think Team Mega Monkey Awesome Laser is a good name for us. Seeing as were one of the few teams around that actually has a monkey in it and we do have lasers, said Max.
Tia sighed. I like Endangered Anything Rescue Squad. said Po with some finger language.
If were called Super Monkey Group, wont people think were all monkeys? said Max.
said Po.
s nothing wrong being a monkey but people will be disappointed when we turn up and were not all monkeys.
Tia held out her watch, showing one of the mathematics functions - a random number generator usually used for code-breaking. Everyone generates a random number and the highest number wins. Thats what we name the team, no arguments, no takebacks. Okay?
Max and Po shrugged in agreement. As one they each hit START on their watches. Numbers started to flicker.
TEAM YOU - OOPS WRONG BUTTON, echoed Cornelius voice from the ship. A second later their watches switched to video mode, hiding the random generators. Cornelius appeared and he didnt look good. His normally pale face was pure white. Against his bright tropical shirt it looked like hed never return to his proper colour. He held a chunk of carved stone disc up to the screen. Faint writing was etched into the surface.
A North Siberian Burrowing Pony dug dug this up in their field a few hours ago. It was in the lab being cleaned during that business with Toran. What does it say? said Max as they squinted to read the writing. The screen zoomed in, the writing coming up in high detail, shaking with the trembling of Cornelius hands.
Max Tia Corn 1671 Golden Monkeys jum

Love
What is this meant to mean? asked Tia.
Cornelius turned the disc so they could see the top edge of it. ve already tested its age and it was carved well over three hundred years ago, he said and zoomed in on the disc top.
The writing was worn but still readable:
Sarah Michael Claire Joseph
The Parents, whispered Max.
I dont understand, said Tia.
The screen zoomed out to show Cornelius sitting at the control panel. His colour had started to return. He gulped from a large glass of fruit juice and took a deep breath.
When there was that explosion while your parents were trying to protect Pos troupe of golden monkeys, I assumed Toran had He paused and took a halting breath before continuing. d killed them. But now this, buried on Sanctuary. I dont think theyre dead. I think theyre finished Tia.
In 1671, said Max.
Cornelius held the disc up again and turned it over to the back side. Carved into the stone was:
5
There are more, he said.
There were three quiet beeps as the random number generators finished.
Po gave a soft ook as they stared out at The Betserai floating on the perfectly clear water.
The Parents, said Max.
said Tia.

Breaking up is never easy, especially after you've spent months training for a race with a buddy. But there are times during a race when you may be better off running on your own. I've seen it happen with some of the marathon runners that I coach. On race day, one runner feels great, the other is suffering, yet they stick together because both feel obligated to their training partner. So one runner struggles to keep up and the other feels as if she's holding back, and neither person has a good race. So what's the proper way to leave a running buddy behind without feeling like you're abandoning him or her.

There is only one way to really know how fit you are - take an exercise fitness test. This test is known as the gold standard because it accurately measures your cardio-fitness using your breathing or oxygen consumption. This lab-quality test can be taken at most health clubs, chiropractors’ or physical therapists’ offices, college exercise labs, or Heart Zones Testing Centers. There are two different tests for you to take - the resting test that measures basal metabolic rate and the exercise fitness test which measures your current level of fitness using oxygen.
The resting exercise test measures your basal metabolic rate which is the number of calories you burn each day if you are sedentary.  In other words, this is the caloric cost for you to maintain life functions: the energy spent for your heart to contract, your brain to work, your lungs to pump air, your endocrine system to balance hormones, and so forth. During the test, you rest comfortably as you breathe into a gas analyzer that assesses your oxygen and carbon dioxide consumption. The resulting numbers tell you how many calories you spend each day if you dont move. The number you burn just staying alive. The bigger the number the better. If you have a low resting metabolic rate, then you arent burning very many calories each day. The remedy is a nutrition and exercise program to stoke up your metabolism and increase your daily burn rate.
The exercise fitness testing test, also known as a VO2 test, uses the same equipment, a respiratory gas analyzer. This time you do an exercise test that slowly ramps up the speed on a treadmill or the effort on a bike (power) to measure the amount of oxygen you use during exercise. This is called the volume of oxygen or VO2. This test takes about 15 minutes. The test results give you 7 important numbers about your metabolism:
Your maximum heart rate or threshold heart rate number which is used to set training zones.
Your threshold, the point at which your body is not able to use fat as easily and begins to rely more on other fuel sources.
Total calories expended in each heart rate training zone.
Fat and carbohydrates spent in each of the zones
Recommendations of how to improve your metabolism and health.
A ranking of your fitness compared to others in your age group.
Your max VO2  a predicter of your cardio performance.
Altogether, it take about an hour for each test. Your certified metabolic specialist (CMS) will explain what the numbers mean. You may still need an activity program and nutritional advice on how to improve your metabolism to get fitter. The certified metabolic specialists can provide referrals. The cost of the tests vary by location but the range is typically:
Initial Resting Metabolic Fitness Test: $100-$130
Initial Exercise Metabolic Fitness Test: $150-$200
